Reinstalling Gas Tank Latch - WTF??#@!!%!

Just got my parts back from the painter... how in the world do you get the little spring back in the gas cap latch without scratching the tank?

I use tape or thin padding in the area to protect the paint.

+1 painters tape, double thickness just to be certain....

 Thanks for the tip, I'll be doing that soon. did you find new pins, use the old ones or source bolts and nuts?

Mark,HondaMan, has replacement for the pins with a properly sized bolt and nut / washer.
