With our bikes is it ok to fill over the oil stick line?
« on: December 30, 2016, 10:47:07 AM »
We've all got old engine and I was wondering about the dipstick level. Is it okay if the upper level part of the dipstick is filled as well?

I have a weepy head gasket and I thought alittle more would be better for it.. It actually runs a lot smoother.. Might be from the new oil I put in it  however I know the detrimental side affects of having too much oil.. What is the point of that little notch with the extra space? How bad is it to have that extra notch filled. I put 4 quarts into my cb350f when I think the right amount is 3.7

thek the generator seal..if it start leak real hard..there is to heigh oil level..(ignision side are pressured..so it make no differense..there is alvays full of oil back.)...the engine can start burn oil..but thek for smoke..no smoke no problem..Black plugs is the same thing..
on mine bike i hold it between the marks..( Honda did make the marks to perfekt the oil level..) not  to use for overfilling..
make a costum oil pan for more oil volume ,,if you think there needs more oil..

I have a 550F and I did that once by accident...developed a head leak.  Probably was going to happen but certainly seemed to be an interesting coincidence.  I fill my oil with 3 quarts only which is roughly 3/4 way up on the dipstick.

This is a good practice - anywhere between the two lines is correct. Over filling above the high line is far worse than a little under the low line as it makes the engine less free to turn and causes oil leaks to develop!

Over-filling with oil is likely to make your weeping head gasket weep even more. It's not uncommon for these bikes to weep there. You can go all out and strip it down, skim the head, new gasket etc etc or you can just use some rope between the fins to soak it up, and not worry about it - many do. Depends how bad it is.

I think I would be happier for the level to be between the marks. You can use a syringe and tubing to draw out the excess without having to waste your new oil.  :)

If  an engine is overfilled with oil, the cranks can splash too much oil around the engine. This can lead to too much oil on the bores, which can cause smoking and at worst break rings. I have seen a Honda XL 350 where the owner had changed the oil, except that having previously only owned two strokes, he didn't realise that you had to drain the old oil out first. So it was well over filled, and was smoking badly as well as tending to weep a bit out of the joints. Once it was drained and refilled with the right amount it all came right again with no damage.

Owners of a CB550 that have the breather tube still connected to the airfilter case may be better of with an oil level halfway the two marks and not up to the topmark. Some claim less fouling of the airfilter element.

Too little oil will cool less.
I filled my bike with more oil before a long touring when I knew the engine will take some oil on Autobahn the nearest days. Maybe 5mm over topmark on the CB750 K6 dipstick. Checked oil level when I had runned the bike 10-20 minutes, direct at stop.
My car however is a different thing. I've read that too much oil in engine can cause rod failure. (Audi 1.8T - std 190HP)

On th e dry sump 750 if you over fill it too much it simply vents out the oil tank. Might oil the tire ot something else but it will vent overboard. Other than that internally no harm because the scavenge pump output exceeds the pressure pump.

exactly what I intended to write ;)
The CB350 of TS is much more critical on overfilling!
