Welp, got my motor back together and it seems like the cam chain is too big. Made the idiot mistake of not comparing the new chain to the old one before I threw it out. Making things worse is my Clymer manual, which just doesn't jive in some areas as to what year my motor might be from. Sometimes it seems like I have a 78-80 motor, sometimes it seems like I have an older one that someone put a two piece head on.
I ordered what I thought was a correct cam chain on ebay (I believe it has 100 links on it - 25H-100) but after buttoning everything up, and the tensioner let all the way loose (meaning the chain should be at its tightest position) the chain is still really loose. Definitely a link or two too big. Can anybody help me out? Am I missing something? I should have ordered by part number and not by the ebay sellers list of bikes/years it fits on but not knowing exactly what engine I have makes things confusing, there is definitely a different part number for pre '76 bikes vs. after that. If I didn't miss something putting it together should I just buy a cam chain tool and shorten the chain to take the guessing out of ordering a new one?
