CB125S How many Links on the Cam Chain?!
« on: December 30, 2016, 08:07:13 PM »
Welp, got my motor back together and it seems like the cam chain is too big. Made the idiot mistake of not comparing the new chain to the old one before I threw it out. Making things worse is my Clymer manual, which just doesn't jive in some areas as to what year my motor might be from. Sometimes it seems like I have a 78-80 motor, sometimes it seems like I have an older one that someone put a two piece head on.

I ordered what I thought was a correct cam chain on ebay (I believe it has 100 links on it - 25H-100) but after buttoning everything up, and the tensioner let all the way loose (meaning the chain should be at its tightest position) the chain is still really loose. Definitely a link or two too big. Can anybody help me out? Am I missing something? I should have ordered by part number and not by the ebay sellers list of bikes/years it fits on but not knowing exactly what engine I have makes things confusing, there is definitely a different part number for pre '76 bikes vs. after that. If I didn't miss something putting it together should I just buy a cam chain tool and shorten the chain to take the guessing out of ordering a new one?

As far as I can tell I need to shorten the chain to 98 links however I don't see any chain tools that will do a #25 chain, they seem to only go down to #35 (I found one that did list #25 but the review on it said it won't do a #25).

Nate,
I understand your frustration man.The pre-76' CB125S engines take the 100 link chain. What is your engine number as inscribed into the left case ? I would not recommend shortening that cam chain, better to get the 98 link if that's the correct engine# you have for the 98 link chain.

I have a Honda 185 that needs a new cam chain and it takes the 100 link.

Yea, just annoying how many ebay sellers have the 100 link chain listed for 76-82 cb125's, how parts fiches don't have any descriptions with their part numbers and how terrible my clymer manual is. Got a 98L chain on order. Hopefully I will be able to get it on without dismantling the head again. I pulled the stator/rotor and was able to get it out.

On my case it says CB125SE & 1803292.

I would like to buy the 100 link chain from you if possible.
