Degreeing a "Hot" Cam
« on: December 31, 2016, 12:04:17 PM »
Hello All,

Hopefully I drop this in the right area. Was looking for some guidance on degreeing my cam. I am asking here because not much is original in the engine. I am putting a C5 ignition (on order) on the bike so no points. Have a Yoshi B grind cam and an adjustable cam gear. It has been bored out to a 592 running DP592/61s pistons and has a lightened and balance crank.

My question is should I put the stock advancer on and follow the manuals instructions for valve timing or is there a better approach because of the part mods?

Irrespective of the ignition, it's always best to degree your camshaft. The stock cam is nearly stupid-simple to install (notch oriented, TDC on #1 and you're done). But if you have the head off, rotate the crank to find true TDC @1. Mark the ignition plate with a mark. Then install the head. Degree the cam with a degree wheel and find its true lobe centers. Adjust cam sprocket until it's correct.

You can simply replace the stock advancer with the C5 and rotate the C5 the until you reach the TDC and follow their instructions from there.
