My 1981 CB650

Got this bike on a trade for my 1980 ATC 110. I got it as a bobber/cafe I guess, not sure the guy knew what he wanted it to be. The pic is of the day I brought it home. The plan is as follows. Motor is currently out and torn apart, it needed a new head gasket, that is the reason for the tear down. Good thing I did tear it down, as the cam chain is stretched and needs to be replaced. While I have it open I am putting new rings in and lapping valves. Also porting and polishing the head this coming weekend while I wait to find the two head bolts I need. Putting new seals in the forks, as they are leaking. Taking the drag bars off and putting some tracker bars on from TC Bros I believe. Looking for some pod filters that fit better, the ones he put on he mashed to clear the frame and I don't have a stock airbox (I am trying to strip things off anyway). I have a sportster tank off a Harley that I am putting on it, the stock tank is too big and I like the look of a high sportster tank. Looking into possibly a trailer fender to go on the rear and may lose the front fender, not sure on that yet though. Front brakes hang up, so I may be rebuilding a caliper or master cylinder or both. I'm sure there's more, but that's the plan roughly

Not a bad trade. Since you'll replace the rings, are you going to re-hone the cylinders too?

Definitely get the cylinders measured for next oversize, taper and an out of round condition.  Better safe than sorry now than having to tear it down again later.

The cylinders still have cross hatching from the previous hone, but yes we will be measuring to make sure everything is squared up nice. My buddy is helping out with this build, he is a mechanic at our local Honda dealer, so nice to have him arlund and willing lol.

Yeah they are diamond plate zip tied on. They have been nipped off, probably going to look for the oem covers or figure something else out. I'll have more pics after this weekend, going to work on it more Saturday

Got the tank done for the rat bike. For the record, I sanded it and sprayed the flames #$%*ty on purpose. The rest of the bike is cobbled together, so it's fitting the tank should look rough too

So in the process of giving my head a 3 way valve job, we decided to pull the oil pan off for fun to see what the leftovers looked like. Then this happened....apparently it has blown a piston before and the douche who rebuilt it previously dropped an o-ring into the engine. So yeah, glad curiosity got the best of me this time.
Anyway, the head has been rebuilt (new seals, seats cut and lapped). Cylinders go in this week to be honed, even though they looked ok I'm having it done anyway since I have new rings going in. Carbs are soaking as we speak. All the gears in my tranny looked like new. I have the new cam chain. Oil pick up o-rings are on the way. Should be going back together in a week or so. After the engine gets put back in it's time to rebuild the front caliper, mount the new gas tank, replace fork seals, mount the solo seat hinge and solo seat, mount license plate and tail light and rewire. It will not be the prettiest bike in town, but it will be my little abomination. I'll pist again when there is more progress.

hey buddy, nice project. its nice to see another CB650. I am currently building my 79 CB650. i took it down to bare frame, clean up frame, paint black. installed 78 GL1000 front end dual disc with spoke wheels. made my own mounts for rear sets off a 96 CBR600RR. running a 78 750 rear tire, swing arm. also cafe seat and rear loop.
Engine:
complete tore apart, installed new OEM parts everything down to pistons. Stage 1 Port and Polish head.
Gulfer SS lines.
im almost done with it, however I am having issues with carbs 1 and 2. when I bought the bike . it has sat for 10 years. I completely rebuild carbs, everything is OEM new. but carb 1 and 2 once i pour gas and start bike after 1 min they begin leaking from the overflow nipple under the float bowl. i have been trying to figure it out for 3 months now. i even swapped floats from carb 4 a non leaking one, and still 1 leaks.
anyways enought about me man, good luck on ur project and have fun

You have a different set of carburetors.  1979-80 CB650 models have a different head (different spacing but same internal parts) than the 1981-82 CB650 models which use CV carbs.

Thanks CBR! This bike is definately a challenge as far as finding parts. It is my first bike and as I am not wealthy enough to buy new, this is how I am getting into riding. I got the bike on a trade for my 110 3 wheeler, so it cost me nothing out of pocket. My plan is to ride this bike when it's done and pick up a mid to late 90's sportster to take more time on and make my dream bike. I do love the crap out of this bike, but a hardtail sportster with apes, a suicide shifter is something I've always wanted. Anyway, good luck with your bike, I will post more pics when there is progress
