Airbus A380 may get the axe
« on: January 03, 2017, 12:11:01 PM »
I had not realised that this project was in such deep trouble. Far from building a hoped for 1200 units, Airbus will be lucky to sell much more than 300, and almost half of those are going to one airline (Emirates). Additionally, not one US airline has ordered the beast.

Airbus have let it be known that they do not expect to recoup one centime of the €25bn development costs. Some external sources are forecasting that production may not continue beyond 2020 with possibly not more than 20 aircraft produced each year until then.

I guess it must have seemed like a good idea at the time.

Funny you mention it.  I'm browsing the seattle job board.  Two ads, one for aerospace bench mechanic described as multi-disciplinary shop job, assembling, milling, threading, fiberglass work etc.  The other job involved fixing shipping pallets.

One of those jobs offered $19/hr.  The other was paid the new minimum wage of $11, maybe $12 depending on experience.

Guess which job paid the higher amount?!  Hint; it did not involve aircraft.

Boeing has the 747 production line down to maybe two aircraft per month and those are freighters, not passenger jets.

LAX did a huge runway upgrade to accommodate these big birds, too! I flew one (Air France) to Paris last year.  Nice plane, but you have to sell a lot of seats to make it profitable.
