Whats the largest oversize for a CB650???
« on: June 01, 2005, 01:03:05 PM »
So I'm thinking about finding a Cb650 motor to cram in my 76 Cb550. I was just wondering what the last oversize is on the barrel? Anyone have an answer?

Well, likely the largest stock-overbore would be 1mm.  I'd say based on all the big-bore kits around, the largest you'd be able to go is 3mm without new sleeves.  I'd imagine this would take it up to close to 700cc's.

What are these big-bore kits?  Are you actually using a drill and making your cylinder larger?

No, nothing that adventurous.

I don't know where the dividing line between an over-bore and big-bore is, but basically a big-bore kit exists to increase displacement/power.  An over-bore is simply a maintenance issue still leaving the engine operating within original manufacturer's specs.

In some cases, new cylinder sleeves are required to house the new larger pistons.  These set-ups require the old sleeves to be pressed out of your cylinder block, the block itself is then bored, the new sleeves pressed in which are then bored/honed to match the pistons being used.

I just had 59mm pistons installed in my CB550F.  This amounts to a 0.5mm over-bore.  This is right in the middle of the Honda specifications for over-bores.  No real change in displacement.

With a big-bore kit, you can take a CB500 and turn it into a 600cc bike.  A 750 can become over 1000cc's in the extreme (requires modifications to the cylinder block/head beyond larger holes).

Whatever size you go to, you need an experienced machinist with the right equipment to do the work.  Not something to be done on a drill-press in your basement.  The measuring instruments alone can cost as much as your bike.

650 stock engine is 627cc.

Some of you might know that this engine was created from boring out a 550 -- so I'm not sure how much farther you can go.

Propably the reason why only 0.25 and 0.5 oversize pistons are available from honda.

The 650 wasnt an overbored 550 it was an upstroked 550! If you check you will find the bores are nearly the same. I believe---BUT NOT CERTAIN-- that the 605  bigbore kit is actually modified 750 pistons and many years ago in UK a man called Jock Kerr used to sell kits where you bored your standard liners and yes they did get VERY thin but for track work nobody cared. The 555 kit for a 500 is a 3mm overbore which coincides with a 0.5mm overbore on a 550.
