This is a good one...
« on: December 06, 2016, 08:02:56 PM »
Got a call to work on a CB750, and today was the day I met the guy. Blown away when I saw the bike -- it had been in storage since 1980 or so, and I'm guessing those with better chopper knowledge than me will be able to suss some of the parts on this thing. But the story's amazing...

The guy who owned it was from Anchorage, AK. He was literally a pimp. His wife was one of his working girls. He died several years ago and she put all of his stuff in a storage container. She recently died too, and all of the stuff was sent to their son in Phoenix. He'd moved there to get away from them and wanted nothing to do with his former life as the son of a pimp and prostitute. He opened up the container and the memories flooded out -- but they were all bad.

The bike went up on craigslist for $2k. The guy I met today, Daniel, offered $1200 and the guy took it -- he wanted to get rid of it so bad.

Daniel was new to bikes, but he cleaned out the carbs and got the thing to fire, but it ran like #$%*. He hit me up, and I adjusted the valves -- way off, dressed and gapped the points, timed it -- way off, cleaned the plugs, synced the carbs -- way off. But when it was all done, the thing purred. The title says 1971, but it's a KO -- 1-4 carb cables, old carbs, and engine stamp. The rest? someone let me know, although he said that included with the bike was every single piece of paperwork associated with it, including custom frame, paint, front end, tank, etc., all the way to a replaced tail light bulb. He didn't have that stuff with him, but he remembered something like AEE or AAE -- Amen perhaps? I dunno!

I finished up, he was psyched, and he asked me if I wanted to take it for a rip. I'm not a big chopper guy obviously but that thing screams. Hell of a wheelbase... And I was a little jealous. I'm mostly a stocker or mild café guy, but this thing ruled. Happy to hear if anyone's got more info... photos below.

Original pink handlebar fringe?

This is on the rear fender. Paint all over is nice with some blemishes and patina and some scrapes, but in pretty great shape overall with the whole "weed" theme.

Dat tank doh...

Starter button, horn, and brights switch -- key turned the lights off and on, but there are three headlights. Dunno what the second toggle is... kill probably?

Ran pretty well and idles well too. The plugs looked a little sooty but not bad at all. Guessing some jetting work's been done to run those stacks.

I know some people people will cry about this not being original -- but this thing was chopped in 1971.

So, that is not a sandcast motor, right?  Otherwise it could be a very lucrative item if you were to sell it, given the sandcast craze...provided it is not over.  I would expect it to be  a little faded given the proximity to Christmas.

That rabbit is the Hefner Playboy Bunny - a mascot, I suppose. Very period correct.

Definitely leave it as is and $1200 is a steal especially if it has a title. But even that is solvable with a little cash and aggravation.

I nominate it for best Barn Find of the Year..

Must have been a heatscore, back when it was built, bet it would be more valuable in Cal, Col or Wa states right now.

I was thinking Cal, AZ, or NV. Top dollar getter!

I was in Anchorage back then. The owner was probably part of the Brothers gang, they controlled all the strip clubs in town.

I would say that thing has minimal miles/hours on it. Summer lasts about a month up there. Add in spring and fall and you might get 2 months of riding weather. It probably sat in a garage most of the time since new.

Daniel has a nice chopper, Carnivorous Chicken, you should buy it from him...
I hope he doesn't wreck it and insures it for a good amount as others may want to make it theirs illegally.

True time capsule.

Neighbor growing up was into choppers and had lots of run ins with johnnie law.  I helped Dianne push his chopper up the hill to their house after he was arrested at the entrance to the neighborhood.  It was a heavy sucker and it would turn way too easy.  We were lucky as a pair of 12-13 year olds to not drop it.  Dianne was a fiery redhead with temper to match...
The 2 brothers were pretty rowdy...getting into trouble frequently.

You know what's funny? This is the kind of bike I might see on CL and likely just give it a pass, I'm more into stockers and close to stockers or a quick get it running and ditch it. And the asking price was $2k, so I'd figure $1500 maybe. And the back story wasn't all laid out. And the year for the bike was wrong -- it's titled as a '71, likely when the engine was put into the frame. But man, don't think I wasn't thinking about what an opportunity I missed, and how lucky this guy got (although he was specifically looking for a CB750 chopper, and the day -- the day -- he searched for it was the day this was listed). All in all, good on him. he jokingly said he'd sell it to me for $5k. That's not really unreasonable to ask IMHO (but not what I'm looking to spend...). Plus I still have that CB77 to work on... and the T200... and the CL160...

Duanob -- was thinking the same thing -- short riding season, a chopper in AK would be more of a vanity thing. Interesting about the Brothers thing, I'll mention it to him. He's gonna let me have a look at his paperwork at some time. Which included, B52bombardier1... a clean title. Even had the original 1971 Alaska plate. He's since switched it over to an AZ title. I told him he can get a year of manufacture plate for cheap and run that, way cooler than a historic vehicle plate. But in AZ, abandoned vehicle titles are easy and cheap so it would've been another $20 or so.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Let him think it a 71.  Offer him $3500-4000 and remind him it would not be running were it not for your efforts in making it so.  He doesn't have the knowledge (yet) to keep it going.  Need to drill into him to use a good motorcycle oil containing enough zddp and maintain it or it will raise up and bike him.

Sorry to revive the old thread, but he's throwing it out there. Told me he's asking a ridiculous price to see if anyone bites, but honestly it's gonna be worth that to someone IMHO and I told him to fix the year on it (I'm not buying it...). No word if the sparkly green 3/4 helmet comes with.
