Cyclex oversize piston ring sequence
« on: January 08, 2017, 02:11:27 PM »
Only just looking at the pistons and piston rings after having them all fitted and I've noticed the 2 top rings have different colours -- one looks hard chromed, one looks just black. Bottom ring is obviously the 3 part oil scraper, and I've put that on, but which compression ring goes in the middle, and which on the top?

Chrome ring is usually the top ring.
The black ring is normally a scraper in the middle groove.
The top two rings should be installed with the markings up.
Not sure if you have markings on the oil ring set but they should go up also if they do.

That's what I thought it might be -- the chrome ring is beveled on both sides and the black ring is 90 degree on both sides. None have markings, but since they were symmetrical, I'm not too worried.

Yup, I used these rings two winters ago on my 750. Chrome top, black middle, the oil rings. There were no markings on any rings in my set

Better look real close at the black (oil scraper) ring.
Those puppies usually have a taper and the sharp or widest edge should go down.
