Just picked up an old 72 CB500 chopper today.

Figure I'll be doing quite a bit of research as I don't know much at all about this thing.

Seems like a good place to start!

Its a full blown 70s custom chopper. Molded frame w/ girder front end so it's definately staying a chopper!

Although I must admit these older CBs look pretty neat all restored.

Frank,  how would you go about a brake to this front end design?  If you thought the stock brakes sucked therefor this bike with only rear brakes would far exceed that pitiful amount. Can you say accident waiting to happen?
It is definitely a child of the 70s. Cool example worth cleaning up and maintaining its patina and aged look.

You have to build bracket that fit either side of the girder legs, then spacers in the middle and bolt it together.  Some came with small bracket or bushing welded to girder legs.

Yea front brake is going to happen.
Too many deer and wet roads where I live.

I'll probably throw a drum on it until I figure out a good disk setup.

That's badass.  My wife wants a big king/queen seat like that.

By chance do you know much about those period frames?  Who was the main manufacturer for these rigid CB choppers at that time?

I've got literally zero numbers on this frame and I wouldnt even know where to look.   This bike is registered as a stock 72 CB500.   Kinda nervous about it.

Both your and his are hardtail sections added to stock frames.
So your frame should have numbers.. Could have paint or bondo over them.
In WA state, is the reggie number off the motor...or off the frame ?

In WA, they issue the title to the frame VIN, which for our CB's is stamped on the right side of the neck.

Nice Find ;) You may want to take a look at a mechanical disk brake sourced from a CB200T...................but any small drum unit is better than none ;)  Since the 21" spool will go........consider an 18 or 19-inch wheel to help with slow-speed handling and to somewhat level the motor.

The cb125 manual disc brake was a nightmare, did they fix its ussues so the cb200 did not have those issues?
