Is the airbox breather thing necessary? ('78 750K)
« on: January 13, 2017, 07:15:02 PM »
Just wondering if the breather thing (17361-405-770 and associated parts) are really necessary on my '78. I'm guessing it's an emissions thing. Just looking to avoid unnecessary clutter.

No. It sends crankcase blowby gas bacy through the carbs to burn off any hydrocarbons. You should put a filter on the breather tube to keep bugs from living in there and blocking it with coccoons or whatever. There will be oily "smoke" coming out of the tube. Leave the condenser/separator in place if that will bother you.

Yes, it's just an emissions thing. I lost the little swivel connector that joins the breather tube to the airbox, so I just leave the outlet of the tube unattached and stuck a little piece of foam filter material in the end.
