76 CB 550 directionals
« on: January 19, 2017, 02:45:39 pm »
I'm new to the forum! I'm working on a 76 cb550 for my first ever cafe racer conversion.  I bought after market directionals that are 2 wire and I hook them up the same way the oem 2 wire directionals were, but the new ones don't flash. When I activate the signal, they light up but then just stay on and don't flash. They're attached the same way as the oem ones. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

Double check the wiring diagram.  The proper colored wire with the wrong ground connection will cause that issue, as well the improper color wire with the right ground.  (Happened to me)

You may also have to swap the winker relay to suit the wattage of the new lamps.

Originally your model had duplo (dual filament) bulbs in front to function both as indicators as well as running lights that were useless btw. I don't know about US bulbs, but here a suitable bulb would be the 21/5 Watts duplolamp that we use as tail/brakelight. So if you're gonna use them as indicators only (wise!) you'll need a simple (single filament) 21 Watts or 18 Watts bulb. Anyway, make sure those running light wires (orange/white (left) and lightblue/white (right)) do not make contact with the bulbs + pole. You haven't picked LED indicators, have you? Check your wiring scheme. Is yours a CB550K or CB550F?

Thanks for the response.  The bike is 76 CB550F.  They are not LED, they are incandescent,I believe 12v and 10w.  I wired the rears just the same as the stock lights. (1 power, 1 ground).  I've read some different info talking about relays?  Really new to all this and figuring it out as I go! Thanks for the insight.

Ten Watts will not be enough. You need 18-23 Watts each to make the winker relay work.

Hey I'm here. Maltier12 hit me up via PM. I have what you need.

Honda front winkers use a three wire system. You need a special harness with directional diodes to make aftermarket two wire flashers work. I put Triumph Bonnie flashers on my bike because I liked the way they look and had to make something up to make them work properly. I have a few extras I made up.
