I have a 1977 CB400F and the engine side cases are painted.  Is it possible to remove the paint and polish the side case?

Yep, if the side cases are aluminum, knock yourself out!

I just did my 350F, but went the brushed look with scothbrite pads.

Here's what they look like in stock form.

That is the factory finish for the CB400F. The CB350F had polished covers and they can be returned to as new with a buffing wheel using a Sisal buff initially to cut all the old crap and clear coat away and then a loose buff with a black and then white compound as shown on the CB350F motor.
