550 Cam Chain Tensioner Installation
« on: January 31, 2017, 11:05:03 AM »
I tried searching for this topic, but I remember the search function being a lot better in the past. Doesn't seem to work at all right now.

I need my memory refreshed -- If I want to swap out my cam chain tensioner with a new (to me) one, do I need to lift the cylinders up in order for it to properly slot in? Or can I install it  without lifting the cylinders? Keep in mind, I only want to replace the tensioner, not the guide. I'm trying to avoid having to disturb my cylinder base gasket.

Thanks

you'd have to lift it up a little bit. best is also to remove the oil pan to make sure the tensioner is properly seated in its place at the bottom.

you can search in google: yoursearchterm site:http://forums.sohc4.net/

Yeah, it has to be lifted up a bit unfortunately. You can look in with a flash light to see if it hits it's mark but opening the oil pan is a  better way I think.

If you lift it a little bit, chances are the gasket will tear and you will have to pull the jugs off anyway. Might as well plan for it.
