Hi everyone,

First time poster, but been lurking for some time, looking for info etc.

I've finally pulled the trigger on a new to me CB750 Four. And I'm desperately needing some professional advice.... I don't want to be jammed up with a sale which could turn into a money pit.

Now, I'm very new to the CB range, I have Yamaha RD and a SR, but never a Honda CB.

I made a last second bid on a what is stated a 1979 CB750 Four.
I looked at it and thought it's a good looking enough bike to work on. But after much research, I've found there could be problems and maybe a chop job?

The bike in question is below: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/162355723998

The frame number seems to be well large compared to the engine number.

Frame# CB 750G 1005794
Engine# 750GE 1012022

I studied the photos with a friend of mine and he saw that the rear foot rear are most likely from a 1979 CB750G? And not a "Four"?

The petrol tank, side covers, wheels (including the rear drum), looks to be from an early model? 1972/3?

But frame, engine, carbs looks to be from 1979?

I would appreciate it greatly if anyone can chime in on this ordeal.

Thanks in advance!!!

Not sure whether this is a typo, but it is definitely not a 1979! 1979 CB750s were DOHCs.
According to Honda records, the frame number belongs to an early model 1969 so does the engine serial number.
However, sidecovers, taillight bracket and headlight eras are pointing to a later bike (1972-)
There were some differences between U.S. and European models, so this being a German bike, it is hard to say from here.
I cannot find any reference in the info I have to the "G" in the serial numbers.

No, it's not German. It's non US is all. The rest of the world (including Australia) got F2's with frame numbers beginning with CB750G. Seat hinge location is same as F2. There was a recent thread on this.

So it's a mishmash bike?
Is this a regular thing with this CB model? Or all CB models?
I've always bought bikes that are some what original... this is freaking me out.

Don't Panic galatic hitchhiker!

Its just a bitsa-bike.  I don't think honda would have made one themselves, but vintage enthusiasts (like us sohc heads) have put together a few resto mod "franken" bitsa bikes out of love, and the desire to keep the cb cult strong.

Your seller seems to have done a fine job of that bike.  So what if it is rated R for rider?

Well one of my concern is that the German road laws are difficult to understand for someone like me, who is not native. And I know there are rules and regulations in each county.

I'm worried this beast could be problematic later on when I need to renew the TUV.

Also, I have always liked the idea of an original bike, and not a hacked mod... but that's me I guess. I could have paid less for something that I can probably try and work on myself if I wanted a mishmash bike, tho I'm sure the seller did a fine job at it.

The frame is all F2. If the number on the vin plate denotes it as anything else, be very wary.

Why mess with a bike that could be a mix of stolen parts?

There's plenty of straight ones out there. Personally, I'd walk away.

I think OP already bought it.

I don't know many theives around that would refurbish a stolen bike(s) - and if they are in fact stealing metzeler tires, I wanna know where they're getting em!!!!  And where can I get tank and side covers in that condition!

I don't know how the vin tracking system works in germany & europe, but in my area, just call state highway patrol with a vin number and they'll inform you if a PO reported it missing.  A washingtonian who picks up a not-stolen but lost-title unregistered ride can apply for new papers and reggie.  Only drawback is the state wants you to stay married to it for 3 years.

We might also have totally different opinions on what a "chop job" is.  Cause nothing about that bike says "mechanic was on meth" to me.  It doesn't look like an amateur cafe racer, or even a "jwilde" post-apolalyptic brat build.  Hell, it's shinier than my bike!  Only thing I see truly "chopped" on there is the 4into1 reverse cone exhaust.

A concours level NOS bike, you're right, this isn't one of those.

If you truly can't bear the thought of owning it, send it to me, I'll toss it on the pile with MonkeyRocco's Bimota 400.  I'm offering water view burial plots, just pay shipping  ;D

Yeah in theory I already bought it, but if the bike isn't as stated in the description, I can always back out.

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
Mate, don't walk away from that deal, fcuking run! It's a pile of parts from different models that were never supposed to go together, it's (as Robert DeNiro described the new US President) a mutt, it's a bum, it's not what you want, and it's a lot of coin!

Don't be swayed by what has been said above, lots of well meaning guys here don't know sh1t from clay, but if it's shiny, then (to them) it's a good buy. It's not. Remember, you won the war, so tell the seller to fcuk off with his dodgy bitsa! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

...It's a pile of parts...

But as a whole it's a firefly class cargo ship  ;)

(Gsxr forks never belonged on the front of a 550 either)

Now Leave my shiny out of it  ;D

You are right though.  In USD, that is a lot of coin for a rehab'd bike.

Ha ha, putting GSXR forks on a 550 is like putting lipstick on a pig, why would you waste your money? Yeah yeah, I know, love has no bounds, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but a 550? seriously? Oh well..........

But seriously, there are plenty of good, original bikes out there, but that thing isn't one of them, so washryc needs to look elsewhere. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I'm still offering serene, lakeside burial plots for unwanted motorcycles.  Tall evergreen trees, wild beaver and mallard population, deer, elk, rabbits.

Plots are large enough for Rocket III's  ;D

Thanks for backing up what I said Terry.

That bike is a mongrel. The frame number stamped on the neck should match the number on the VIN, if it's already been ascertained that the VIN denotes it as an early bike then you know the 'proper' frame number isn't going to match.

Don't know about where the OP is, but in the UK you would stand to lose the bike and not see your money back if it was found to be stolen (in whole or in part).

Ha ha, no worries Martin, if we've got one thing in common, it's that we both know a POS when we see one! (and then we buy it anyway......... ) ;D

Thanks for all your input everyone.
I've already messaged the seller and cancelled the sale. I'm not up for a mishmash bike no matter how good it looks.
It says it's a 1979 bike, and I'm sure there is a 1979 part in there, but looks like there are more than 3 bikes put together...

Anyways, see what/or if he replies and what he says...

Ya'll are fixated on that 79 thing.  It's an easy typo to make...careless to not notice, yet simple to make.

I don't read german...but if the word "Hobby" in the description means what I think it means.  There's some of your origin story.

Description said something about TUV til 12/18.  Seller may have already made the machine legit to register and ride...it seems a prudent question to ASK rather than assume.  Folks get a bit testy when you call them criminals (not to mention hack mechanic)

Now could ya'll quit sharting on the seller just cause they put together a bike with the incorrect year of HEADLIGHT EARS, CHAINGUARD, and SIDE COVERS.

Bloody hell people.  Where is your decency?

It's already established the machine is not a concours restoration.  Can we leave it at that?

Some of ya'll got a real twisted bias against bike builder/sellers who might not belong to this forum.
I've seen it come up on here a lot from a few different members.  It's rather distateful in my opinion.
The hypocrisy leaves a bad taste in my mouth because there are several members who posess bitsa bikes, We give them a badge of honor and a trophy for having enough spare parts to do so!  But then crap on the work of a non-forum member for doing the same!  Way to make the forum look like an exclusionary bunch of arseholes.  Give one build a BotM award, but label an different bike STOLEN just because mismatch parts and a possible typo?  MOO!  MOO MOO MOO!!!!

I hope the seller turns out to be an sohc4 member and comes here to #$%*slap ya'll.

Then they and I can joke together about he FREAKING SWORD fixed to my bike because we are BLOODY PIRATES RATED AAARRRRR!

Obviously i haven't been on the forum long, and I wasn't taking aim at the seller. I was purely asking questions to see what's legit and what's not on here knowing there are people with much higher knowledge than myself.
I obviously know nothing about what is correct and what isn't on these bikes, but I have to say that if I was to pay good money for a bike, I would want it to be legit in the way I personally think it's legit. (For me, it means not a bike put together with a few different bikes). Personally I have always gone for original condition bikes even if it is a bit run down. Nothing wrong with modding or hacking a bike like this, and it is my fault for not looking closer and knowing more about the bike before jumping on it.
But I think it would have also been fair (tho usually doesn't happen on eBay) that the seller (or any seller) be honest and say what has been done. It doesn't take a lot to write a proper description of an item/bike/vehicle.
My 2 cents of course.
I know nothing about forums members here, but whatever I've read has help me learn more about this bike and any future purchases of any CB.
Thanks.
