I'm getting some cleaning done as I prepare to take the top end apart. Happily, steering stem races, swing arm bushings and steering head races came out with little effort. Lucky.
I am using the ultrasonic cleaner for anything that will fit in it. It seems to loosen paint fairly well, not sore if it's the Simple Green, the vibrations or both.
I think I need fork tubes. One has some pretty bad grooves and of course the rust up around the headlight ears.
More to come.

No turning back now. So far internals look fine. I'll be checking clearances, installing new cam chain/tensioner, maybe a primary chain.

Cam tension rollers have some nicks, new stuff is on order, that was the main mission for going in, as well as valves, bores and leaks.

Yes, some of the early ones are ready. My favorite is the Hayden variety which is coming in now. I will give my neighbor some bananas, he has Haydens. I also have papaya in the back yard, which is producing very reliably.

I don't think this engine was ever opened since the factory built it but the sealant I found is dark brown, much like Permatex. It looks precision applied so I assume it's from the factory.

Go OEM on the cam chain tensioner parts.  There have been some problems reported about some of the aftermarket stuff.  Hondman started a thread about it and was doing some experimenting.  Don't know what the results were.

We knew somebody who had an avocado tree on Maui.  We were frequently gifted with  big bags of avocados.  I remember finding some guavas on the way to Hana once.  They were my favorite, but hard to find.

Do you have a link (just curious).  Was this more focused on manual tensioners like the APE one, or on heavy duty delrin parts like the Cycle Exchange parts?

Since I'm building a mostly stock K3 I am trying to stick with OEM as much as possible especially engine internals. My 2 over pistons will be the "all Japanese" set from  Yamiya.
Carb kits likewise.
Have to change the Simple Green in the ultrasonic before I go on, I made it pretty dark. It sure saves a lot of time. I put anything in there that will fit.  For even larger parts I have a 5 gallon bucket of it for overnight soaking, which also really helps. SG in that too.

Oh, and about the guavas on the road to Hana. Most are a variety called strawberry guava, now considered invasive (they are). They have imported a bug to help control them.

I purchased one of the Cycle Exchange racing cam chain tensioners, but never got to building my next 750 motor.  In theory the material (being more durable and heat resistant) should be an improvement over stock.

Looks pretty good. My K3 will likely rarely see the redline. Back in the K0 day I got a thrill out of goading Sportster guys into drag races, they always lost and couldn't figure it out. Not so much any more. I just like the sound of those no number 4 into 4's running up and down, music to my ears. Throw in a little valve clatter  for good measure..now that's a party!
I'm starting my crank and Rod bearing plastigage event next. I hope it goes well, the bearings look almost new.
Also working on the plan to paint the engine. From the looks of it, Honda painted this engine before it was assembled. I may do the same.
