Recommendations solicited - new tires for stock 1978 750K
« on: January 25, 2017, 06:46:00 AM »
First post, new member. I read the "tires" FAQs, found and read a dozen or more posts about tires, but am still interested in some recommendations of new tires to put on my '78 750K for everyday use. I have other motorcycles for track days and hardcore twisties, this bike (which I just acquired) is for two up riding and longer distance "get out and see the country" trips. Ive seen the Dunlop 404s recommended, Spitfires, Metzlers, Contis, Battleaxes, Avons, GT501s, Pirelli MT66 - hell, everything seems to get a recommendation :), but some people recommend specific widths while others recommend against those same specific widths, ratios, etc. As you guys (and gals) undoubtedly already know, stock tires were 3.50x19 on the front and 4.5 x17 on the rear, tubed bias ply. Not a lot of those choices still available. Can't find a matched set of ANYTHING at motorcycle superstore, Bike Bandits, any of the usual suspects, even if I acknowledge that I'm really looking these days for a 100/90 x 19 front and a 120/90 x 17 (or it seems most people think a 130/90 or even a 130/80 x 17) rear, that takes tubes.  So for those of you that ride a '78 often, in all weather, but only moderately "hard", and retained the stock laced 19" front and 17" rear, what have you had good success with? I admit I like the look of the white letter Bridgestone Spitfires quite a lot, but again I cant seem to find both a front AND a rear in an applicable size. Anybody in love with the tires they've put on their '78K?

I'm running Shinko 712's in 100/90-19, and 130/90-17.
I bought the bike with these tires recently installed by the PO, and have zero complaints in 6000 miles.
www.americanmototire.com has great selection and sizes available.

I had a K8, I put the Dunlop 404's on it.  I believe the sizes were the same as Fly posted above. No complaints...

I liked the Avon roadriders on my 76F.

Thank you for the kind and quick replies so far. Its currently wearing a 100/90-19 front and a 130/90 -17 rear and I thought those might be too wide considering the original specification dimensions, but it sounds like those sizes are fine. I was looking hard at the Avon Roadriders but alas, they only offer a 90/90 for the front 19" wheel. I'll look at the D404s and the Shinko options in those sizes and check out the linked source as well. Much obliged.

I know I guy that puts some serious hard fought miles on his avons.  I havent asked him how long he goes between sets.  But I can guess he makes em last, doing 200miles a day on them sometimes.

I got about 8000 miles out of IRC gs-11's.  Then the rear got boxed out and the front developed a wobble.  Could have gotten more if I'd been more dutiful in minding my tire pressures.  Lesson learned, gonna see how long the new spitfire tires last.  But so far so good.  They feel better than the gs-11's did.  Smooth ride.

I see where I was in error - I was only looking under "front" and "rear" instead of under "universal". Thank you! I think I'll give both the tire and that store a try. Since I'm asking, what tubes and rim strips do you guys like, or all they all pretty much the same?

If you can find them I recommend Pirelli or Michelin tubes (or any quality name brand - but I haven't seen Dunlop tubes in a few decades), the stems are much better than the "white box" or store brand ones and they balance better probably because the rubber thickness is consistent. Rim band... whatever you can find. Rubber is rubber for them.

Much obliged for the replies, everyone. I went with the oft suggested Avons in 100/90 -19 front, 130/90-17 rear.
