Topic: Another name for circlip

I'm trying to get a replacement for a circlip I had to remove when working on the alternator shaft on a bike.

Trouble is, looking for them ain't easy.

circlip - the kind without holes in them.  And not the kind you use for piston wrist pins.  Flat circlip.

I'm getting all sorts of hits for snap rings, snap ring pliers, but nothing on circlips.

If it was an e-clip I could find them all day long.

Seems like the only circlips I can locate are for piston wrists - round profile, wrong type.

The Honda OEM clip is junk, which is why I didn't just get it from Honda.  It most definitely has to take a thrust load - 6 heavy Belleville washers cushioning the drive gear for the starter and crankshaft chain.  Overdesigned in my opinion - but it works.

I think I have a tool for installing/removing that style of snap ring? I was told it was a snap ring tool, but never found it's proper use; it didn't work well with either e-clips or the snap rings with the holes on the ends.

I'll tell you this - the proper tool ain't a screwdriver.  Tried that - have 2 stab wounds in my hand to prove it.

It's a circlip tool, but the ends are weird - ends of the snap ring fit into grooves on the tips of the snap ring tool.  Lets the tool grip the snap ring without it slipping out under tension.  I've never actually seen one - that's just my recollection.

There are a couple of them in the CB750 tranny.

The 650 and I think 550 have them in the starter clutch assembly. I used snap ring pliers and it was a pain.

Yup, replaced them all when I was troubleshooting Red's shifting problems.

People call these transmission pliers.  They are designed for the snap rings described in this thread.  I bought it when I rebuilt my first transmission over 30 years ago, a three speed in a Mustang.  This one is made by Proto and I think Snap-On has a similar one.  Note when the handles are squeezed the jaws stay parallel and the jaws have divots in them to hold the snap ring ends.  It works great.  A lot of front axles on 4X4's use those rings and this reaches right into the hub and makes removal and replacement a cinch.

That reminds me the np435 i had to rebuild to replace the failed T5 in my jeep, it had these circlips too.

I ended up grinding cheap HF pliers to assist me in removal of those circlips.
