Question: How fast can I go?

Response: How much do you want to spend?

Is the problem with the tapered cone being too thin at one end or just too difficult to grind to interference fit with a knife edge on the part. If it is heat treated it is going to be resisting suffering from a crack once the flywheel is fitted. It would crack unless hit sharply/dropped from height until forced beyond where it need to seat, right. ?  Why do you feel it is unsuitable?
A little dry ice packed around the end of crank for few minutes for last few minutes the tapered sleeve is heated in the oven. Pull off dry ice, retrieve part from oven  with heavy gloves and  rags that won't burst into flames or melt, pickup and transfer the cone to the crank and give it a few light taps to seat it on the crank. A line with scribed marks with machinist's dye helps you know it is seated to the depth required. Right?  Only risk is part might crack if too hot and if crank is very cold, due to thermal shock.
David- back in the desert SW!

actually Don, I started thinking I should stick to honda stuff as that's probably the best chance at having a matched taper. I bought a honda shadow 750 flywheel, and it's closer to the right taper but it's larger in overall diameter and definitely won't fit under the cb650 stator cover even with modifications.

I'm going to try getting a later VFR flywheel and a cbr600rr flywheel and try those next.

as I've been working on that, Mike has been hard at work on my head at JMR porting and my trans is all done at Fast by Gast.

and a big ol box of new honda stuff came for the engine assembly from partzilla. still awaiting more from David Silver and CMSNL

the 650 head job at JMR has but nothing but a challenge to say the least. Of course, Mike arose to the challenge and says we should be set to ship back end of next week.

beyond that, I haven't touched the alternator project. I'm SWAMPED in the shop right now as the weather just broke here in buffalo and I'm one guy up to my eyeballs in maintenance and repair jobs.

I had a feeling that you might be getting seasonally swamped as people gear up to ride in Upstate NY.

yeah, I'm hoping to get the motor stuff all at home I think so I can work on assembly on my lunch breaks and evenings here and there. When I get the head back I'll be motivated to get started. Already bought all the plastigage and assembly lubes and stuff to start bottom end stuff. one I have bearings and all that nonsense figured out I'll be ready to have pistons, cam, rockers, etc. coated via Cal's guy.

My motor is basically done. It's all about the fab work right now.

received good news from Mike Reick!

what a project this head has been for him, I am thankful he pushed through and did as much as he did for me/it!

couple weeks I should be over the spring rush and able to begin playing with re-assembly of my motor.

Looks new, Nick.  Did you replace any valvetrain parts?  Stage 2.5?

replaced all the guides with 550 ones, custom shims, kibblewhite springs, and I think it needed exhaust valves. I forget honestly, it's been quite the uphill battle getting this in check over the past couple months. but yes, stage 2.5 essentially.

Mike sure does some pretty work.  I am looking forward to you having some free time to finish your own build up (vicarious thrill).  My project has been trailing Dave Barbier's build, so I've been able to pick up some intel on what to do and what not to do.

What does a stage 2.5 on a 650 consist of?  The head design has hemi head and breathes better from the get go...

You are going to get this dyno'd aren't you?  Without real numbers no one can say definitively how much improved or how much more or where the improvements were seen...right?

Mike does create a lot of eye candy work that is hidden behind covers...  he should create a JMR Performance subtle enameled  metal badge that could hold up to weather which would look good below the stock side cover badges or on the tank under the Honda like Super Sport is on the F bikes.
Only available to bikes with head work at Stage 2 or above.
It could be like a special edition or tuner badging such as AMG.
Had some idiot argue his vehicle was tuned by IPD by throwing their suspension components on his car and dropping the performance chip into his ecu.  The ecu chip actually developed by a company abroad.  He wanted to call it an ipd edition of that car.  AMG does far more than throew some parts on them to make them an AMG version of a Mercedes. IPD actually opened a repair and upgrade shop sometime after that argument...then you could get a true ipd tuned car...otherwise it is merely a suspension or components by ipd...
Head work being a major step in creating a version or tuned by X vehicle in my mind...

Stage 2.5 is something Mike coined to describe

Stage 1: Includes the following. Disassemble, inspect, hot tank, bead blast entire head, porting and reassembly. OEM valve guide seals are extra OR can be provided by the customer.

Stage 2: Same as above but more extensive porting especially around the guide boss and intake floor.

Stage 3: Requires removal of valve guides. Extensive reshaping of both intake and exhaust ports. Epoxy reinforced intake spigots. This head will require new guides, guide honing and a Serdi valve job.

I believe Mike used the term "2.5" because the head does not require as much extensive reshaping of the ports as a 550 or 750 but still contemplates new guides.

I think the best part is the hidden on the fin engraving from Mike as to the spec level of the head, name and date.  If someone else takes apart an engine and sees one of his engraving and port work, I hope they know how special it is.

Yeah that's pretty cool. Also the engraving on the cam.
