I have found a guilari seat! should I buy?
« on: January 27, 2017, 08:12:33 AM »
Hello everyone,

I have been looking for an original cb350f guilari for acouple years now and I found a really nice guy willing to sell me his.
I was curious as to your opinions of the seat and if the price was right. I have attached pics. It's actually a cb400f seat not a cb350f but I don't know when I will have this opportunity to buy an original like this again.

I am alittle nervous with the bump on the back of the hump of the seat as well as the tear on the bottom and the little hole on the side.
Is it easy for me to fix these three defects?
He is asking 250€

All opinions welcome thank you!

That seems like a reasonable price considering the rarity of the real deal. An upholsterer should be able to shore up the weak spots in the cover to keep them from getting any worse.

To me that doesn't look like a Giuliari seat. I believe it's the same German brand seat I had and sold about a year ago.

IIRC, Giuliari's had the signature on the rear hump under the HONDA logo.

ah darn so it's just a honda seat? I still like the styling. what does it mean to shore up the weak spots? So you're saying those bumps on the back could be fixed?

If this isn't a guilari than what is it? The guy is from Germany.

Since it's not a guilari is there anywhere else I can find this sort of seat?

All of the Giuliari seats I have seen have a little tag stitched into one of the seams saying 'Giuliari'.

Not saying they all do - but I have seen quite a few!

That looks like original giuliari seat to me.  250€ price for a seat isn't for everyone.  I paid $300 for mine for 750 bike

Dos, Giuliari clearly signed his 'masterpieces'. But don't let that stop you. I myself am one of those no-nonsense people, that for instance never understood what's so special about a sandcast. And the most extreme form of snobism I've met, was when somebody, that had been helped here quite some times, refused to scan and upload his CB550K2 Owner's Manual (for the benifit of all and to complete the online collection that others had worked hard on), giving no other reason than that it was still in it's plastic cover and he then had to open it...

Giuliary usually put the sidecover logo on the side of the seat. Although I have seen some without, this having the CB400F logo, makes it very likely a Giuliary. The German made Paschburg & Wunderlich seat for the 750, I posted in a different thread does not have the side logo.

Mine had a logo, was almost identical with Dos his, but was not a Giuliari. But Giuliari or not... who cares.

I don't know much about Guiliari seats but here are a few observations on the seat for sale:
1. That is a stock seat with a hump and vinyl added to the back.
2. There are no good ways to repair ripped vinyl.
3. The 400 in front of the FOUR has been rubbed off.  You can see it in one of the pics.
4. If I wanted that particular seat in perfect condition, I would have the ripped rear piece of vinyl replaced.  Cost would be between $50-$100 to have a seat maker repair it.
5. The hole in the stock vinyl on the side would require a new stock style cover and then the hump would have to be added to it.
6. This seat could be made out of a nice stock seat for about the same money.

A genuine Giuliani seat will have this mechanism for the hump storage compartment door.

Scott, look closer.  That is certainly NOT a factory seat pan modified with a hump.  That seat pan stamping is very specific especially around the rear hump storage area and door stamping.  That pan stamping and latch type is identical to all 3 of my originals.

If that is not an original Giuliani pan/hump/door assembly, I'll be very impressed.

My guess is that it has decent quality older (+/-80s?) aftermarket cover on it that matched the genuine design very well, but lacks the authentic Giuliari stencil work.

OK, first of all, the name is Giuliari and not 'Guilari' and certainly not Giuliani, a name that people in Europe associate with a thief that should be stored in a compartment behind a door with a well designed lock as far as we are concerned and yes, you may put our signature on it. So, don't do this to Giuliari, a well respected Italian that painstakingly consequent signed every seat that left his workshop.
The seat in the pic is the same brand that I had (see my post above). I recognise it by every detail. Period.

Deltarider,

My apologies.  Autocorrect in the USA apparently changes Giuliari to Giuliani automatically.  I just didn't notice it. I just tried it.  Giuliani sucks balls.... >:(

Like I said I don't know anything about these seats or the stock pans but this certainly looks like a stock cover with a hump stitched onto it.  Are the real articles made like this also?

George is right - it is a Giuliari seat pan and foam. The seat has been recovered at some point in time - probably with a cover for a CB750 Giuliari. That is why the embossed seat pattern doesn't end prior to the hump. We still manufacture millimeter-perfect Giuliari covers and foams (for the 750K) and could (if I wasn't such a lazy lump) start making complete repro seats again.

Yes, that seat cover does not appear to be a Giuliari cover.  It may well have been an aftermarket cover that started life as a factory replacement cover.  My original below has a specific mold for the pattern of the seat the has the smooth border before the hump.  The stitching and material fitting isn't nearly as cleanly done as the genuine article either.

I was simply referring to the pan and hump storage locker door and associated parts.  They appear to be genuine Giuliari.  As I said earlier, it's rather rare to see a 40+yr old Giuliari seat with it's original cover.

Here's a pic of my bike with the genuine, NOS Giuliari I scored on ebay a few years ago for a couple of hundred bucks. I had to laugh when I read Delta's gushing reference to Giuliari, these things were pretty agricultural, the standard Honda pan is much better engineered, the Giuliari had hinges that looked like they were made by a 10 year old with crap welds, and if you can find one with a cover that hasn't fallen off due to the crappy glue they used the foam will have crumbled into powder.

They weren't hand made masterpieces, in fact, Giuliari were suppliers of seats to most Italian bike manufacturers, and made aftermarket seats for just about every major brand from Honda to Harley Davidson. I had a stock Giuliari  seat on my Laverda 750SF and my mate Pete's got one on his Guzzi T3. People get all gooey about stuff made in Europe "Back in the day", but in reality, stuff made in China in the same period was probably better quality.

Ted, get off your butt and start making your repro's again, they are way better than the originals! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
