Has anyone attached a sidecar to their CB750?
« on: January 28, 2017, 10:09:18 PM »
Hi,

Has anyone attached a sidecar to their CB750?
I tried the "Search" function but wasn't able to find any posts for "sidecar".

I've gotten to the point that a need three wheels. I'm not interested in trikes, so I purchased a Cozi Rocket sidecar for my 1978 CB750F. I've started to assemble and connect the sidecar frame to the bike frame.

I'm hoping to find some CB750 sidecar enthusiasts to talk about frame connections, set-up and other malarkey.

Regards,
Andy

Have you ever driven a side car rig before?  I ask because, although there is much less chance of falling over, turning and holding in a straight line requires considerably more upper body strength than on a normal bike.
If it works good, it looks good...

Thanks Sean, Yes, there is a Ural dealer near me, so I have only test ridden one. I realize the Ural front end is set-up specifically for sidecar use. I thought about just buying a complete machine but really didn't like the lack of power.

My understanding is less trail equals less steering effort and the "F" model actually has more trail than a "K", but I love my 78 CB750F and I'm willing to customize it to reduce the trail if it's absolutely necessary. As far as effort to go straight, I thought that depended on set-up? ie Toe-In, Lean-Out & Axel Lead?  Here's a chart from the Set-up Manual I'm relying on...

As long as you can get your partner to do this, you'll be fine...

I bet my riding partner/wife is actually willing to lean out a bit on right handers, but I'm never going to get her to wear a helmet like that!  :)

Thanks for the links!  I have a "Universal" Kit for the Bike to Sidecar connections, but it looks like I should have purchased the bike specific mounts from DMC. Maybe I can still return the Universal kit?

Pillage, I have only ever driven one rig...so can't tell you how well it was set up or anything specific.  I just know that handling is nothing like a normal bike.

Honda did not realy say the 750 vas good for sidecar..and did not rekomandet it for use on a sohc..personaly i thing the lack od torque in low rpm on all sohc is a problem..i have rideen nimbus 750 sand BMW and Ural..and this bikes is torque monsters..and have a low topspeed..and better for sidecar use

after a auer riding you are as tired as a vhole day riding a "normal" bike(..if you make funny trix the vhole time)..but still just riding takes strong arms..

you can not use a lot of power to get heigh speed...sidecar riding is slov..onlu on straight road you can get over 80 kmt..its just for relaxing riding vith the kids..or to use as a Tool box mover..if you vork araund in the city or close araund areia..post deleviry vas a great vay to use this bikes in the past

If you rode a ural sidecar than you know what they're talking about.
My 15 minutes of Ural experience was enough to convince me out of the idea.
That, and washington state requires an addition mc sidecar endorsement with additional testing and on bike exams.

A bought a CB550 a few years ago, it came with a sidecar.
I had no interest nor room to store the sidecar, listed it on CL and it sold immediately.

Thank you for the positive responses. I thought I might find some CB/Sidecar enthusiasts here, but I guess not? Good luck with your SOHC bikes.  I'll keep the sidecar talk to the sidecar forums, as I'm just not interested in discouraging posts.

I have a 78k with a Velorex 562 on it. Nice setup for running errands, hauling a lot of crap, taking kids and people for rides. I have to carry 75lbs of ballast when there's no passenger otherwise it flies pretty easy. Would not want it as my only bike as sidecars do impose restrictions on things. But it's fun to blow away Urals with....ha ha. I got the sidecar for $600 then found a 750 for $450. New paint on both, tires, chain, sprockets, seat cover, and voila, fun little hauler.

Here it is with my favorite passenger:

Another option is the buy a Ural and upgrade the motor to a BMW power plant.  Apparently, many BMW twin engines will drop in.

Just because there aren't a bunch of sidecar guys doesn't mean you should get discouraged. After all, you are a Honda SOHC guy, so you are right where you belong. Tell us about your F.

I have a 1978 CB750 coupled with a California Companion side car. I purchased the cb750/California Companion specific connection kit DCM. It was worth every pennie. Easy set up and works well. Been driving it for the past 6 years. Top speed is 120 kph. Love it.

Here is another photo taken in February. Drove bike and side car across the lake. Nice to be able to extend the season. Electric heated clothing is nice. I carry a deep cycle battery in the side car to not over tax the old honda's charging system.
If you have any questions give me a shout.

Look for member "jukku" in the CB750A forum. He has had several sidecar rigs, and is preparing a rig for this season.

CB750F3 & Cozi Sidecar update. Thanks again for all the positive responses and links!  It took patience and a little imagination, but I finally have this rig solidly locked down and adjusted to run straight at highway speeds. I'm a happy rider again! The old CB750 handles the lightweight sidecar with ease. I've only been able to put a 1,000 miles on it but it seems like it's a great set-up for my situation so far.
