Used car salemen
« on: April 17, 2017, 06:32:32 AM »
Ha!
My wife thinks I should treat the used car salesman like a decent human.
I said, "No not really, because they will lie to your face so you have to treat them like
the untruthful , back-stabbing, scum sucking individuals that they are."

so, who is right?

Michel

ps. as a side note, we were "sold " a car on 4/7/2017, and lo and behold, the dealership can not find the title (11 days on).
I said they should knock off $100/day for each day of non-delivery.
We had been looking for a used car for approximately 1 month in 3 states and she Really wants this one.

Hey Michel,

Google "Arthur Daley" from the TV series "Minder" and you will get a flavour for the level of esteem afforded the species in the UK.

If you have such a disregard for someone based upon their trade, why don't you sod off and buy a new car? You approach these people with a prejudice without a consideration that many are very decent people, working to feed their families, and do right by folks as best they can. Trading in "used" goods is Caveat Emptor. If its a guarantee you want, go buy a new car.

Most of those guys have both hands tied behind their back by a mook manager anyway.

Everyone I know is trying to figure out why they're so obsessed with pulling credit inquiries.  Doesn't matter how many times you say "I'm paying cash" or "I'm just here to get information."  They're sweating bullets in their chair as if god will strike them dead for not processing a credit app!  One guy caved and admitted he is required to finance a minimum of $1000 on every sale.  We walked from that deal told him to tell his manager their policiy is a sham.

If you are buying used, buy from the owner. Skip the middle man and save some money. If you don't know enough about cars to know a good used one when you see it, then you probably shouldn't be buying one.

+1 buy from an owner if you have enough cash.. You can tell a lot about a car by the person you may be getting it from plus you can get more background history etc. if they are deemed by you to be straight and honest.

I mean, if they own the car, they could apply for a lost title, no?

Not talking about a salesmen, but my wife really likes the looks of the Hyundai Genesis. I have to admit for a 4 door sedan they look pretty good. Would not be new of course but 2011-2014 range. Anybody have one these or know much about them. What I've read they get decent  reviews.

Wow. Lots of personal attacks here, really did not expect that.
Maybe I deserved it.
Anyways, most used car
salesmen know a lot of people but have few of those people as friends.
All the mechanics I knew over the years that worked
at dealerships refused to associate with salesmen because they were
usually  sleezy people. (so, not just my opiinion)

I realize most dealerships do not keep their salespeople very long because
of unattainable sales goals (like the $1,000 minimum financing mentioned)
and other pressures put upon  them by owners/managers.  Not my problem.
You ever notice
salespeople do not last long at any one place?

I DO work on my own cars. Have all the tools between my brother and myself.
Have Never taken a car back to a dealership for maintenance after the
warranty ran out or for routine maintenance (oil changes etc etc) as the
dealership always takes too long and always triies to sell you more work
than you need.

Have looked (like I said) for over a month for a reasonably priced ,
low milage, 1 year old car.
Guess I did not say : Both
at dealerships and private sales. The one we found just happened to be at a
dealership. I have enough cash to pay for the car in full as I believe in saving $
for big purchases without the hassles of financing . I also do not  have a trade in.
This I started doing when years ago, I had to finance the purchase of a used Yamaha XS750 at 16 percent.

I understand what calj is saying and I do treat a new or used car salesperson with respect but that doesn't mean I trust them. A salespersons top priority used or new is to make a sale and they have all kinds of tactics up their sleeves to make it seem like you're getting a deal when your actually getting screwed. When I got my Ford F150 a few years ago we stopped at a new car dealership to see what they had in trade ins, they didn't have what I wanted so they tried talking me into a new 4x4. I really didn't want a 4x4 and it's price was way more than i was prepared to spend but being I showed a slight interest in it they latched on it and said they'd be willing to work a deal with me. After wasting a total of 3 hours while the sales manager supposedly tried to iron out an affordable deal it ended up no different than what they originally offered so out the door we went. We later found out that the 3 hour wait had absolutely nothing to do with them trying to iron out a good deal but instead it was a tactic both used and new car sales people use to essentially wear you out with the idea that you just give up and buy it so you can go home.

I worked in the motor trade for ten years. I never met an honest salesman then or since, and I've been driving nearly forty years.

I'll concede there must be straight ones out there, just in my experience I've yet to come across one. The problem isn't confined to the motor trade though, I've been screwed by window and insurance salesmen too.

The best buy geek that sold me my iphone 6 also hooked us up with "verizon" insurance.
Come time to utilize the insurance.  Found it wasn't a verizon service at all.  It was best buy's service, AND!  Their policy is to NOT insure the iphones.
I almost threw a tv at them.  Almost.

If you have never seen the old Kurt Russell movie"Used Cars" you should. It makes fun of every cliche about salesmen that you ever heard. A true classic!

I think this point of view is admirable (except the "sod off" suggestion is unnecessary.) But the reality is the used car industy's bad reputation is well earned.  That is easily documented. I have no doubt there good people in the business but the pressures on them to engage in bad practices are strong. I know the dealer investigators in ITD and they are kept very busy indeed.

Dude, don't insult whores like that!  ;D

I bought a car from a 'reputable' dealer only to find out it had been wrecked. After doing some research I found out one the dealer's salesmen had wrecked it and they fixed it out of pocket. That's why it never showed up on CARFAX. I don't trust any of them anymore. ALWAYS take the car into another service department to have it inspected too, that was another lesson learned. Bastahds!  >:(

It took a while for the pain to go away but we've since got rid of the car and let someone else deal with that 'colonoscopy' feeling!  ;)
