What Steve said Bill, don't waste what mojo you have on that old junk. Call a scrap guy and let him make a few bucks off of it, donate what you can. Life is short and getting shorter, jump start this project. Purge it! Will feel fantastic to have a nice shop you can work in. Heavenly.

It's awesome to have heritage like that Bill. My best friend in school lived next to a bike shop. I should have been more of a pest. I remember the big Harleys with the leather saddlebags, reflectors and fringe. They even shared a driveway.

I would not trade my experiences that I remember from those days, for anything, Don. Just being there, as a kid and growing up around those motorcycles, the guys, their motorcycles, seeing the new ones come in and when I was big enough to do anything at a, I was given tasks, to help get the new ones ready to put up front. And going to the events with my Mom and Dad, to see races. Watching my Dad and Granddad participate in an off road event, nearly every Sunday afternoon.  Still got most  all of those memories stored up there in my head and the motorcycles I have now, help keep those me.ories alive, as well as the tools and equipment I have, from back then, which also includes my Dad's tools that hung on the back of his workbench and I have a workbench as well. Not sure if it was Dad's or Granddad's, but that doesn't matter. Anyway, getting up, to go get after it again. That's for allowing me to share. I am Very Proud to have had those experiences.

Oh, I agree, at first, my thoughts were to load up and make runs to the salvage yard, but then I realized that I would spend more on gas, than I would ever get out of it and it would be so time consuming. So, I am working to eliminate the junk, so I can get things set up and organized, so I can get onto the bikes. And I do appreciate whatever input as well. Thanks for yours.

Anytime I place a random pile of metal out by the road it is usually gone very quickly. Free add on CL will get somebody there quick also if you cant trust them.

Thank you, Steve. I knew there were those out there, who would do that, thing is though, I have a lot of nuts, bolts and such too. I mean a lot! I have been loading up some of the larger tin cans (6lb 15oz) and whatever I can find here to load stuff into, because I would rather, who picks the stuff up, picks it up outside, instead of in the garage &/or shop. Just for my own piece of mind. As I am talking about this, I realized that I could move my car out from under the carport, start stacking the stuff in there and throw a tarp over the stuff, to keep it in the dry and not only get it out of the garage/shop, but I could then get moving on getting things better sorted out. I imagine I will have to deliver the oil/paint/ batteries to a landfill, that deals with hazardous waste, don't I? Anyway, getting back with it (I like to check in here, when I get to where I need a break. So, til then. Thanks again folks.  ;)

In Kalamazoo there is a place that takes hazardous waste for free like oil, gas, spray cans, oil based paints, tv's and other electronics, fluorescent light bulbs etc etc.. They do not take latex paint, want you to open the can and let it dry out and throw it in regular trash. May be a place like that in your city or county.
A friend of mine has a Triumph and Ducati dealership that has a used oil burner in it for heat so he gets all my good used stuff.  ;)

Well guys, I live near a very small town and am about 30 minutes away from a town that might have facilities that I am in need of, 45 minutes away from a pretty sizable town (for Arkansas and I am about 45min. to an hour away from Little Rock. Sop, my options are a bit different from some. As far as the junk, I am going to try to get someone to haul it all off. I Can take the oil to Walmart & Batteries too, I think.  Just have to get things ready, then go for whatever I can get accomplished, as far as getting things gone. Appreciate the input too.  ;)

Well, still working on this, as I can and making progress. And, to my disbelief, I keep running across things, in the oddest places. My Dad was one who liked things organized, but I guess, as he got on up in age, he lost some of that need to organize & bought things, without remembering he already had at least one. SMH.

To Date, I have found The Things listed below:
Most are from Harbor Freight too:
     1. a H/F Router Table W/ Accessories and a router, still in it's box.
     2. a H/F service cart, still in the box.
     3. 4 complete KlikFast Pop Rivet Gun Kits
     4. a H/F Universal Bolt Together stand for power equipment
     5. a large used Pnuematic Framing Gun (under a bunch of junk.
     6. a H/F Swing Back 1,000lb Trailer Jack (Still packaged)
     7. a H/F Heavy Duty Air Riveter
     8. A Sign Crafter Kit
     9. Several Complete Dremel Sets
And there are more and some of this stuff was in the most incredible places. I can only
Imagine that much of this, was purchased after my Mom passed in Feb 2002 and he was just
trying to keep himself occupied and not thing about it. My Dad was a pretty talented
person and could do just about anything and if he didn't know how to do something, he
learned pretty easily. I just wish I could have learned more from him and then passed it on to
my Step Son Shane. But rest assured that I will try to pass on what I Do Know, to him.

Well, back to the grindstone. Things are coming around better this go round.    ;)

Well, still working on my place, in amongst the "Honey Do's" and  Daddy Can You? Making headway though. Stinking weather keeps changing up and trying to get me to catch something and I have had some issues, but not bad enough for me to see a doctor. But, seems like nearly every one else has. Oh we, later.  ;)

Yeah, off and on, Bill. For example, I had a 2 speed Dremel, also one with a variable speed and some accessories. Then I found Dad had 3 (so far) and numerous accessories besides. So, I have 5 Dremels and also I have 5 Pop rivet  Guns Sets & 1 was one I already had. Got several Tap & Die Sets, Several 1/4" Corded Drills, several 3/8" Corded Drills and a couple of 1/2" Corded Drills. I had 1 3/8" & 1 1/2", the rest were his. I had a 4 1/1" angled disc grinder, he had 2. I had a wire welder, he also had one and a Lincoln Arc Welder. He had a Compound Miter Saw & So did I. That is just a sample of the stuff (His & Mine). LOL  ::) Did find my Dad's screwdrivers & open end wrenches that he used at my Granddad's shop and I arranged them on the pegboard, in memory of him. Also found that he had his old original workbench from "The Shop" (as we fondly called my Granddad's Shop)./ I won't be getting rid of that.

I Don't know if you all thought I had gotten buried in the junk I am working to get cleared out, or not. But I am STILL working on this mess! Without seeing what I started with, I don't think anyone has any idea, what I am dealing with. Still working on it and making headway, but still aways to go. Got a plan on hauling the actual junk off though, Also, I am still coming across thinks, in the most unusual places. As for what I am finding, for example, I think I have 5 soldering guns, so far and at least 2 or 3 are new. Then, I also have a total of about 5 pop rivet kits. Found a large pneumatic nail framing gun, Under a pile of junk. Also found a new (still in the package) trailer crank type front support leg. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. But, I am still plugging. Have to take my Daughter in for an appointment with her neurologist in a bit though (that will be about2 1/2 - 3 hrs away from my task (about 45min.- 1hr to get there, who knows how long the appointment will be and then 45min-1hr back). Catch you all later on.

LOL! You would be surprised. My sisters and I have been working on my Dad's "collection" for two years now. He had nine storage units, averaging 10x15 in size, some filled side to side top to bottom, front to back. Over 50% of the bulk has been newspaper. I found a battery charger, N.I.B. that still had the receipt stuck in the lid that he had purchased over ten years ago and never opened.

Look up "hoarder" in the dictionary and you'll see my Dad's picture. I've got a more subdued version of the hoarding gene, nowhere near as bad as my Dad... I only have one storage unit!  8)

Time for "tough love":

You are still PLANNING on getting rid of the actual junk? C'mon Man!!!
You are either the biggest procrastinator or you just want to keep the junk.

5 soldering and rivet guns?  That is so easy, keep 1 and donate the rest to Goodwill. Did you know you can write off  EVERYTHING you donate??

This has been going on now for over three months, should have been a 1 week job.

I Don't know if you all thought I had gotten buried in the junk I am working to get cleared out, or not. But I am STILL working on this mess! Without seeing what I started with, I don't think anyone has any idea, what I am dealing with.

I can sure identify with your situation. Doesn't help that Dad been collecting somewhat, for many years 87yrs old, when he passed. And looks like he picked up speed, when my Mom passed in Feb. 03. I also have found new things that were new, still in the boxes, like a router table w/ accessories & a router, a service cart (Both from Harbor Freight. A New Universal stand, for power tools.

I, too, have seen at least one HF service cart still N.I.B. as well. My Father spent quite some time trapping when he was young and about ten years ago he began "collecting" leg hold traps with some serious fervor. The only one I kept was a huge bear trap.

We need to sit down and swap stories over a beer... or twelve!   ;D

Got a plan on hauling the actual junk off though,

Also, I am still coming across thinks, in the most unusual places. As for what I am finding, for example, I think I have 5 soldering guns, so far and at least 2 or 3 are new. Then, I also have a total of about 5 pop rivet kits.

First off, Steve-O, Shouldn't really judge, without first hand knowledge.
There is junk everywhere & I If you would have seen what I walked into & what I have accomplished, you just might  have a different outlook on this. I started out going through what my Dad had (that I knew of, at that time) and we both had duplicates of what each other had. I picked out which ones to keep and which ones to try to sell. I sold over $2,000 worth of items, a little bit, after we moved in. When I first really looked at my Dad's Shop area, he barely had a path to get from the front, to the back. There was more junk everywhere & sawdust all over. tons of nails, good ones & rusty ones, Nuts, bolts, parts from several weedeaters, a good size Mercury Outboard motor that has the lower end off of it, Also, when we moved in, I had 3 storage units, in Greenwood Arkansas, where I used to live, of the things from my old house & I have been working down the level In the garage & Shop area, as I could and working things from the storage units, to my garage & shop area & I Am down to 1 storage unit there. I am not dragging my feel on this, I am doing this by myself and at my age, energy isn't what it used to be. I also, don't have a truck. I do have a trailer, but there is quite a bit that is is so
small, That it needs to be in some kind of container & I am putting that kind of stuff in large cans. I get overwhelmed at times, but I keep on going, stopping for doctor's appointments The kids & sometimes I need to go with my Wife to her appointments, like when she gets back treatments. And, being on a fixed income, messes with me as well. Just a heads up-, on what is going on here.  ;) A week! Seriously? I wish I had photos of when we got here and what I was facing. Anyway, Tomorrow is another day. Have a good one. And, I have to plan things, around our life here, you know?

The only way you can sift through and discard stuff within 1 week is to toss everything without regard for what it is, why its there, and whether you should keep it or ditch it. These things take time because you never know when you're going to come across something of real value; either sentimental or monetary.

Just pluck along, Bill. A little each day, sort it out best you can. You may just find something your Pops squirreled away from your childhood that will bring back a flood of memories. Like that first woodworking project you made. Or a special Mom's day leather etch... Something.

Not judging.   I'm a project manager and have cleaned up many [newly purchased] properties where former owners were hoarders.  Also dealt with my my in-laws home after they passed, they were hoarders as well.
This thread you started 3 months ago was titled getting GARAGE set up for a shop, I still do not see why it would take longer than a week to get rid of useless trash, do some organizing and have room to work on a bike?

I stopped counting the number of trips we've made to the recycling center. One of the larger units was pretty much 80% paper...

and it had been there 35 years:o

Some of the newspaper goes back 50 years. The most difficult part of the process is the storage units are in Ohio and I live in Florida.  :(

Like Bill, we are plucking away at it!  8)
