oil pressure sensor
« on: February 06, 2017, 06:35:16 AM »
I want to use this oil pressure sensor/switch in combination with motogadget motoscope digital display. I cant find smaller
oil pressure sensor. It needs to be resistor type of sensor because motoscope only works with this kind of sensors..... it will look really ugly if I put in the place of standard oil switch.

So maybe somebody of hi perf. people know about smaller sensor?

Also the solution I have is: in place of oil switch adapter I will put tube fitting, oil tube will go from switch sensor position to somewhere below tank.  I am not sure if this will create some problems with pressure on bearings etc?

Mounting the pressure sender remotely will have no effect on oil flow to the bearings, but the tubing used to connect it should be small, like 4mm OD. Use plastic tubing designed for oil pressure gauges rather than copper, which can crack with fatigue. Any air trapped in the tube should be "burped" by loosening the fitting at the sender with the motor running; this may not be an issue with such a short tube, but I've seen trapped air cause false readings with long tubes. Be sure to ground the body of the sender.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

As long as the Pascal's law is still valid, remote mounting of the pressure sensor will not make a difference.  ;)

I would search Summit motors for a smaller sensor, it must exist.

Yep I was thinking in that direction but I need to ask first.... i will put bleeding valve for sure .

Will look for Summit motors..

Can you give some technical details of the sensor and the display you want to use, (link to a website where the full electrical specification would be very useful, particularly if they have diagrams)?

Nice project if this is possible?

There is this unit on the website suggested above:

https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/sww-279a/overview/

.................. but details are very sketchy at best, (do they withold technical details for a reason as I find this very strange as an electrical engineer)?

OK, more searching has found the manufacturers website here:

http://www.stewartwarner.com/en-US/Products/StewartWarner/Product-groups/Senders-Sensors/Thick-Film-Pressure-Sender--P-N-279A.aspx

It would appear that the resistance is 240 ohms at atmospheric pressure and 33.5 ohms at 80 psi, (but that is NOT definite)! It is designed to work with their own guage, but if your "Motorscope" display is configurable, you may be OK?

www.summitracing.com

I searched there.  No resistor once. And also pretty expensive. Same sensors cost 5 times less when ordered directly from china(ebay/aliexpress).

I have that one but with integrated pressure switch

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VDO-type-Oil-pressure-sender-150-psi-10-180-ohms-low-11-psi-alarm-warning-switch-/251719530760

mine goes to 100psi but the same company etc.... .... dont spend more then 20 $ on this kind of sensors thry are all made in china.

the point is that they look small on picture but they are 3 times bigger then original cb750 pressure switch. There are smaller one but they are not resistor type of sensors... I will use tube and hide it below tank....

The switch is small because it is a simple diaphragm operating a set of contacts, a sensor is somewhat more complicated.

I cannot see you getting much for $20 to be honest. I normally pay about $150-$200 for an oil / fuel pressure sensor (0-7 bar). It would not be much fun if it failed mid-race and sprayed you with high pressure fuel (flamethrower comes to mind) or oil!

The last ones I bought had a body size of approx. 1" (25 mm) diameter and 3/4" (19 mm) long, but these give a voltage output (3 wire type).

If you go into the trouble of routing oil line up from the engine, I would go for oil pressure gauge and not just sensor.

The gauge he is using (Motogadget Motoscope if I am correct) has an onboard display for engine vitals, so the sensor is used to populate the display of pressure, oil temp (if he uses it), air temp (another sensor) etc, etc, etc. It (gauge) was designed for track use and has a comprehensive breakout box for data inputs.

It won't steal oil from the bearings especially if you burp it. One of my bikes (drag & street) came with a gauge up between the speedometer and tach, it had a plastic tube feeding it.
