Topic: 550F Muffler

I'm not quite there yet, but I'm eyeing up the exhaust on my 550F project and have two questions.  Other than some rust I'll try to soak off, the headers look okay, but the muffler is shot.

1. How best to separate the two so I don't damage the header?  I sprayed it with PB but didn't do anything else yet.  Looking at the parts diagram, it seems like cutting it off and working on the leftover is the way to go, but I figured I'd ask.

2. What is a suitable replacement muffler?  I like the look of the original and want something quiet.  Most of them appear much shorter and/or don't have a large enough opening.  I'd also rather not spend for a whole new system if I can avoid it.

there's nothing quite like the original 550F muffler. if that's what you want then you may have to search long and hard for one.
cone engineering have many options. you might find or put something together there that suits you.

You might have to twist and pull.  Some people use HT silicone to seal the exhaust seams.
Hacksaws are an effective tool as well.  Just have a plan and new muffler ready before you chop!
I like the sound of my old yoshi stubby.  There are cans like that on ebay for varying prices.  Cone Engineering is a popular piece for these bikes and really do sound great.
I'm also a fan of the modern silencers.  Oval cylinders and diamond teardrop shapes.  Those really work with a sport-4 motor.

There is a clamp and gasket right where the foot peg is. If it's rusty it still should come off pretty easy.

I used the MAC bolt on. It's didn't sound much different than stock and looks fine.

If you shop the number you can find it for less elsewhere. I think I paid $167 for mine. Don't forget to reuse the kick stand stop when you take the old muffler off. Ask me how I figured that one out.

I've separated the muffler on my 550F, soak, heat, twist and shout works.

Although I dont have one, Cone engineering makes great products and many guys on here have them. The quiet core is popular...

I have noticed that the original CB550F muffler manufacturer SANKEI still makes very similar mufflers today for Suzuki SV650's! I wonder if that muffler could be made to fit?

I also want to avoid carb jetting issues.  I just want it to run like it did from the factory.  Aside from a sticky #3 (of course) float, the carb rebuild went just fine.  No interest in plug chops or other exploratory work.

Then you may want to haunt ebay until a salvaged 4into1 exhaust comes up for sale.
