16" rear and 18" front
« on: February 07, 2017, 05:16:12 PM »
I'm starting a new build with a 72' CB750K and I've had some thoughts about using a 16x3" rear rim and a 18x2.15 front rim. I'm still undecided on tires at this point. My question would be, have any of you used this particular set-up before, or does anyone have some input on any problems I might encounter? Thanks!

Here is a factory 19 front and chrome 16x3 rear combination for reference, on an early K1 with an F tank on it. It was a popular swap at the time as you could put a much fatter tire on the rear yet retain the factory front and more or less blend in.  Very common with vintage sohc4 choppers as well.

There can be an endless debate regarding how such rim/tire size changes will affect your bike's handling.  For you it matters how you intend to use the finished bike.  Clearly, if your interest is to try to hold your own in a steep corner with a modern bike, that combination probably isn't ideal.

The finished tire size on each rim also affects these things.  Tires for 16x3 rims tend to be wide and reasonably tall, not too far off a factory rear tire.  You can get different diameter tires for an 18" front tire, varying by more than an inch.

Most that use a 16x3 rear also use a 19 front, but nothing wrong with a 16/18 setup.

Cool pictures. The reasons I thought about a 16 inch rear were to lower the back end a little, and the 18 inch front would would kind level out the stance of the bike. I know a lot of people would disagree, but I like the look of a moderately lowered bike. It would also give me a little more room between the frame hoop/flat seat and the tire so the tire doesn't rub at full compression. Also, I would be able to put a bigger/meaty tire an the back and a slightly wider tire on the front. The build I'm going for is sort of a muscle/brat mashup (I don't really like the word brat) so I'm not really shooting for a canyon carver, it will be more of a modernized retro cruiser. Really, I just want to do something different than the norm. Thanks for the pictures and information!
