Period-appropriate helmets?
« on: February 06, 2017, 10:27:17 PM »
Just about to get this thing on the road and I wonder what sort of helmets all of you are wearing? Ideally I'd like something with a 1970s look to match the bike, but with modern comfort and safety features, all without breaking the bank.  Any suggestions?

If you really want a retro helmet, a Bell Bullitt is a classic-styled full face.  https://www.bellhelmets.com/powersports/helmets/street/bullitt-30

Helmet is for protection. The helmets from the old days are crap compared with modern models.

My favourite helmet from late 70's was Jebs Clay Regazzoni I used in many years. I dumped it in a dumpster 10 years ago which I regret. Looked cool and good in high speed since its spoiler pressed the helmet downwards on face. Not much insulation and damping material inside.
Did not lift as my later Shoei Dominique Sarron replica from 1989-1990. Look still almost like new. Might be a collector item.
But lift over the face in higher speeds, from 140km/h ---->.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominique_Sarron#/media/File:Dominique_Sarron_1989_Japanese_GP.jpg

I went for a good and convenient helmet with good aerodynamics. Schuberth C3 Pro that is the best helmet ever on my head. This blue color match the bike's Candy sapphire blue. Nice on head in 200km/h ;)

I can just see Steve McQueen pulling that helmet on and sliding into a road racer. I'm wearing my old drag race helmet, it has the fire resistant interior but is expired for racing use. I guess I should toss it and get a new one.

I have one, too.  Good for parade rides like DGR.  Not exactly "modern safety" though as an open face.

I found the Bell Bullitt to be underwhelming on all respects. I ordered one and it felt cheap, was horrendously uncomfortable and extremely expensive relative to other offerings out there. I wanted the retro style but could not justify a 2x price just cause it looked cool. I went out and spent $200 on an HJC which fits like a glove, has tons of features like vents and visor levels and is relatively light with nice graphics and construction.

The Bell Bullitt Retro looks cool but looks like they might be discontinuing that model.

Not likely. They have 2017 models listed. Bell was running a 20% off their entire line of helmets last month -- I suppose that might have been what you were looking at.

Not the first criticism I've heard about the Bullitt.  The most common issue is noise.

It looks nice, but I too cannot justify buying one when I have much better helmets.
