Making a Dymag Magnesium Wheel video
« on: February 09, 2017, 12:33:29 PM »
I will try to add link later
Part of this video shows them casting a magnesium Dymag, same as one I have. Lot more work than casting aluminum.  Lot of waste material , probably to eliminate pits.
Lots of voodoo going on to clean the metal before pouring.
Search on Youtube  BBC Technical Studies Die and Investment Casting.

I dig the Dymag 3 spoke wheels, truly some 80's superbike kit that makes any big 4 look even better. Between these and a repop set of Morris mags I don't know which I would choose, but either would be spectacular.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Frank, see the address bar at the top of the page that shows the link, put the cursor on it and click on it {left click}, it will turn blue, then right click on it and a window will open up, click "copy", in your thread just right click again {the window will open again} and "paste" and the link will now be in your reply, you have to learn this sooner or later... :P

Frank,

Way cool.  Thanks for posting.  If anyone needs old Dymags or Morris magnesium wheels refurbished I can recommend Frame Straight Systems.  http://www.framestraightsystem.com/  He did a set of Dymags for me last year.  Had to blast them, check for cracks, apply a chromate finish to prevent corrosion, and then paint them.  Not cheap, but magnesium wheels can corrode and crack.  More of a problem with older wheels like mine which were on a 1982 roadracer.

Did you see how much they cut off the side.. I think to eliminate surface pits.
Not really waste if its at the foundry, all get remelted.
They have a lit of other videos , quite detailed explanations of how stuff is made.

Does that video not answer a lit of questions about casting ? Even car wheels and other parts..
I was surprised at how much they have to fiddle with casting magnesium vs casting aluminum or cast iron.
I was so surprised when I saw a wheel that I have, being made...
