Ride report!
So I’ve been enjoying this bike and riding now that the weather has broke for the past 3 weeks or so.
She’s a beast, pulls strong and doesn’t seem to want to stop. Haven’t really been taking it easy lol.
But today/tonight after an hours ride I believe I had the same issue that Dave B has been having. Cruising along at 65mph bike felt like it started bogging, lost power and died. I checked everything, waited 15/20 minutes and she fired right back up and I rode her the 10 miles home with no issue.
Outside air temp was 86 degrees and the hottest day I’ve rode since finishing the build.

I’m not sure if it’s good or bad that we’re having the same issue. I was hoping one of my coils were bad but now that it looks like you’re having the same problem I don’t think that’s likely.

If this is a over temp thing like Dave and I suspect, do you guys think an oil cooler would help?
If it happens again I’m going to test the ignition with an extra spark plug like cal and Dave have suggested.

I doubt seriously an oil cooler will help an electronic overheat issue (if that is the issue). A simple test would be to ride without the points cover on and see if the increased air flow over the unit makes a difference.

Of course, a roadside electrical test with a meter when this happens would be helpful. I'm sure Paul would have ideas once you've identified the circumstances.

Perhaps an aluminum milled cover with small induction holes could be trick and a solution.

I would agree with Cal as to oil cooling versus electrical cooling.  Something is causing the electrical system to go kerplunk when it heats up.  Oil temperature should not likely impact this.  (I'm going to run an oil cooler on mine, simply because I ride in SoCal and it gets HOT, especially in traffic.)
Questions:
(1) Is heat causing the problem?
(2) Is it heat to the coils or the ignition control system?  -- I would ask Paul at C5 his opinions.

I think Cam’s and my thoughts on the oil cooler would be that the engine itself would be cooled by the cooler in turn radiating less heat into the coils.

I’m not sure about Cam (but it seems it’s the same), but my issue is ambient temperature dependent. When it’s hot (like mid to high 80’s) then it does it. When it’s cooler than that it won’t do it.

I spoke to Paul back in the summer when it happened and he wasn’t too sure the C5 was the issue, then before I could test more it got cooler outside and the issue didn’t arise. Haven’t ridden the bike yet this season. He said that these coils are for automotive use and are designed for high load and heat. His suggestions were to connect the coils directly to the battery for constant power, which I did and to make sure the trigger wires aren’t wrapped around a plug wire, which they aren’t of course.

If it IS the C5 issue with heat, I don’t know if it’s the coils or ignition sensing unit.

Correct Dave
This has only happened once yesterday, when the outside air temp was 86-88 degrees.
I’ve put 200 miles so far on this bike riding in cooler temps with absolutely no issue.

Irrelevant. I believe it was Bankerdanny last summer while riding to the meetup experienced a similar issue with his ignition (not a C5). And if memory serves correctly, removal of the points cover allowed adequate airflow over his ignition and alleviated his issues.

It would seem that the radiated heat from the engine being trapped under the points cover (metallic) cause some electronic ignitions to fail (Dyna had this issue a few years back with numerous units dying on one side). Heat is the bane of electronics. Venting it, heat sinks, or adding airflow stands to reason to be a simple solution and may eradicate the failures.

Since the motor recovers after cooling down, I’d tend to believe it’s accumualted heat. Just my hypothesis-

I believe the only difference with the 550 and 650 ignition cover is that the 650 is deeper. The 550 should bolt right on. Plus, the C5 unit is low profile so I doubt you need the depth of the stock cover.

More riding and haven’t had any issues. Temps have been a lot cooler with the highs 75 at most. I was prepared to test on every ride as well as try Cals “trick”, but didn’t need to.
I’ve decided to do two things.
1. Vent the ignition cover as per Cals suggestion
2. Install an oil cooler with thermostat.
Hopefully we won’t see anymore of this but won’t really be able to test until outside temps climb again.
Using a ‘83 NightHawk cooler with new lines and fittings with either Goddfreys adapter plate or one from Randakks.

Once I get my bike back in service I’ll do some testing. Would be nice to install the cover first and ride to see if that helps anything just so we know what, if anything, fixes the issue.

Once you get all this installed, on a hot day, put an unvented ignition cover back on and see if it stalls out. If the C5 on a 650 always causes this issue it would suck to not know what is doing it and have the cure be install an oil cooler and a vented cover when only one might fix it.

Yes Dave the cover I’ll start with first, as I wait for parts to arrive for the oil cooler.
