Correct Dave
This has only happened once yesterday, when the outside air temp was 86-88 degrees.
I’ve put 200 miles so far on this bike riding in cooler temps with absolutely no issue.

Definitely try removing the ignition cover like Cal suggested. He’s so smart :))

Maybe vent the alternator cover as well.

If it is, Frankenstuffs clear cover drilled with small holes would be a cheap remedy.

Bummer he does not make a cover for 650s.

I believe the only difference with the 550 and 650 ignition cover is that the 650 is deeper. The 550 should bolt right on. Plus, the C5 unit is low profile so I doubt you need the depth of the stock cover.

More riding and haven’t had any issues. Temps have been a lot cooler with the highs 75 at most. I was prepared to test on every ride as well as try Cals “trick”, but didn’t need to.
I’ve decided to do two things.
1. Vent the ignition cover as per Cals suggestion
2. Install an oil cooler with thermostat.
Hopefully we won’t see anymore of this but won’t really be able to test until outside temps climb again.
Using a ‘83 NightHawk cooler with new lines and fittings with either Goddfreys adapter plate or one from Randakks.

Once I get my bike back in service I’ll do some testing. Would be nice to install the cover first and ride to see if that helps anything just so we know what, if anything, fixes the issue.

Once you get all this installed, on a hot day, put an unvented ignition cover back on and see if it stalls out. If the C5 on a 650 always causes this issue it would suck to not know what is doing it and have the cure be install an oil cooler and a vented cover when only one might fix it.

Yes Dave the cover I’ll start with first, as I wait for parts to arrive for the oil cooler.

What is the material for the plate that holds the ignition? The Dyna is aluminum, but it would be nice to isolate the pickups from the engine via a phenolic resin plate that will conduct no heat rather than the stock aluminum one. Could still have small ground straps to each pick up but should help isolate the ignition a little better. The vented cover is a good idea as well but the second enemy of electronics is water, so dealing with that may be an issue in itself.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

What would be awesome, and might do it if there’s any evidence the ignition cover is causing the ignition to be too hot, is to make a little fan that goes on the end of the threaded rod that screws into the crank. Also cut a hole in the front of the cover and holes on the sides for exhaust. Cover the holes with a fine metal mesh. I don’t ride in the rain so that’s not a worry for me.

This is only if removing the cover completely helps cool the system down but only drilling holes doesn’t provide enough air flow.

Just a though while I was on the can.

I agree and I’ve been saying all along that it only seems like heat is the issue because of my experience and now Cam’s experience. Last summer when I was experiencing it, I only looked at the volt meter on the Chronoclassic and there was no change at all. I did not check voltages directly at the coils during it shutting down on me. It’s also definitely not rubbing on anything.

But yes, more testing is needed. I just need to get my bike back in service, so for now, it’s on Cam’s shoulders and the extremely well known desert-like climate of Buffalo New York.

I've ordered a big puck of acetal delrin plastic, enough to make 2-3 prototypes. I'll post some pics here when I start playing around, I'm sure cameron would volunteer to test it out since my motor isn't even assembled yet.
