Engine rebuild options 76 750F
« on: February 13, 2017, 07:50:59 PM »
Engine is coming out, headed for rebuild. Cam chain is beyond adjustment. Not sure what I'll find when I get in there but, any opinions on standard bore rebuild vs 836 kit? Trying not to go broke during the rebuild but, I don't want to miss out on something if there's a huge difference.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Kind of goes without saying that an extra 100 cc with a fresh bore and a cleaned up head etc. is going to offer a little extra grunt.  On my old RC 836 which still lingers in the shop it always felt like I was a gear lower as far as power compared to a stocker. When I was in 5th I was always fishing for another gear cause it 'felt' like 4th till I got used to it.

Ok good Tip. I will definitely do some checking around prior to ordering any parts.  This F isn't currently running so, honestly I wouldn't have anyway to compare. ( 836 versus stock ).  My gut feeling is keeping her stock unless the cylinders are in real bad shape etc.  not really looking for a racer, but don't want to sell myself short on the rebuild.

Probably still a 392 head, so the CI pistons would work fine.
(If its a 410 head, it'll need a shave to get the CR back up with the flat CI pistons)

You might just fair well with a hone and re-ring.

I should mention something: I don't know whether the CI kits are compatible with the F motors. So you need to confirm that.

The early F is basically a early K engine so there should not be a problem.

By early K I should clarify to mean a non 77/78 F or say it is basically the same as the 77/78 K and is compatible with the other K's but it does not use an equivalent top end cylinders-up as the LATE ie 77/78 F so the CI kits will be fine.

Aren't the early F heads used on the later K models (77/78)?

Camchain beyond adjustment sounds *really* worn to me...My motor had well over 100k miles on it and still had room on the cam chain.

If it's that worn, and you're going into head work, just know it'll be at least a couple grand, and it'll always be more than you expect.
