750K4 Correct routing of the throttle cables
« on: February 25, 2017, 11:03:16 AM »
I have a very slow return on my throttle and with the tank off today it is much snappier. Currently the cables route behind the forks, above the key and the back under the Coils.  It is very tight under the Coils.  I wonder if the cable should route inside the frame instead of across, out and back in.

Nobody,
So it appears mine are too long.  Do you agree?

possibly, may have had high bars on it at some point making longer cables necessary.
mount as shown for stockers and see what that gives you just to verify.

There's the rub. PO installed Superbike bars and didn't change the cables.   Can I shorten them or order shorter ones?

I'm not familiar with either solution, but I know both are possible. Hoping someone with experience will have suggestions.

Just like brake or shifting cables on a bicycle, extra cable housing = more drag.

My K2 has Renthal low rise bars, which are similar in height to superbike bars. I ordered the Euro Spec cables from David Silver Spares (which are shorter) and they work perfectly.

you may be able to fix it by getting creative with the routing - if they are not the correct length cables then there is no correct routing but there is probably still a way that will work.
my old cable used to stick till I fixed it by routing it straight forward from the handlebars and then U turning back under the headlight.

That look tangled up and in need of longer cables. Throttle will lock-up when turning tha bike around?
My throttle cables goes inside the right fork ear direct under the tank on right side of the frame, then to the carbs inside the tripple collar.
I have done the cables different, sometimes each cable on each side of the right rubber knob holding the tank, sometimes both over it.

try routing both thru the hole between the idiot lite panel and the top bridge, then down and turning round the neck. From there, (staying against the frame) passing  underneath the main harness, and below the round tank mount cushion, enter into the frame tunnel. stay under the coils and continue inside the tunnel, eventually ending at the throttle cable holders. Throttle cables should be installed first, before anything else.
then clutch cable, brake hose, then wiring to headlight.

I'll try rerouting before purchasing new ones.  Ran out of weekend though.  It'll have to be tomorrow night.

Thank you all for your advice.  I'll let you know how it goes.

I have the exact same routing as you on my K4. I think my cables might even be a hair longer. Ther go through the forks, under the ignition key, then under the coils/through the triangular frame brace and into the carbs. My throttle is free, smooth and snaps shut in all positions. I'm running clubman bars now and used to run superbike style bars, so they are a bit too long. I'm going back to the superbike bars this season so I'll probably have the same routing as you do. Works well for me, though sometimes the cables hang up on the key a bit.
