Vintage Connection vs Cycle Terminal
« on: February 16, 2017, 08:25:42 AM »
Wondering which you guys prefer for getting connections from for these old vintages bikes. I have a kit from Vintage Connection but their connectors don't work with the existing connectors.

Look at Vintage Connections they use the 3.9 connector where Cycle Terminal uses the 3.5 terminal.

Thoughts? I'm looking to add and change a bit of wiring on my bike and want to know where people had the best luck.

Vintage Connections have the smaller 3.5mm open barrel bullet connectors too,

From their description of the SB-1 3.85mm connector: "Standard size for most 60's to mid-70's Hondas. (Do NOT order for any models of Honda SOHC fours, from 1969 on. Order SB2, below.)

From their description of the SB-2 3.5mm connector: "Standard size for all Honda SOHC fours, 70's Honda turn signals, and Honda 90cc's and mopeds."

The vintage Connections connectors I use (the SB-2) are a perfect fit.

Interesting. So they package up kits for other sizes but not those. I'll have to talk to them and see what they can do.

X2  That's what I have.  They work great.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Surprising eh?  Apparently Del, the Vintage Connections guy, got into the business because of a Honda SOHC bike but doesn't have kits with connectors for those bikes.  Be careful how you ask him because I had my mouse on 'buy now' but wanted to ask if they had SB2 in a kit so I emailed him and started off by praising his cool products.  There was no reply so a couple days later I sent this:

Do I have to order these SB2 and SS2 separately?  I don't see a kit with these and the tool.
Thanks,
John

He must have been having a bad day because here is his response:

If you don't see an item illustrated and described on our site, it's because we don't stock and sell what you're looking for. If we tried to second guess everything that anyone could possibly want to buy, we'd have to stock an inventory consisting of hundreds of different items, some of which we might sell only one of, in a given calendar year. That's no way to run a home business.
Go to the site for the Cycle Terminal in New Jersey. The last time I checked, Joe was assembling and retailing a kit that consists of the items that you're seeking.
You need to take your business to the Cycle Terminal.

Guess where I took my business.

Well I took a look at Cycle Terminal and they don't have any of the 3.5mm in kits either but I've emailed both to see who answers first and see what happens.

I noticed the same thing which led me to the conclusion that these 'kits' come prepackaged from their supplier who doesn't offer what we need.  Joe at Cycle Terminal has the time for you.

I know, we are not the first ones to completely rewire a vintage bike and don't need to make the same mistakes others have made and end up reordering.  I'd rather have extra parts and get some generic collection of items that will more than cover what we need.  I'm now using an M-Unit so it's not as critical to have authentic connectors anyway.

I've only bought from Cycle Terminal because they're closer to me and I assume
shipping would be faster.

Now seeing the reply from Vintage Connection I definitely will stay at Cycle Terminal.

What "kits" are you needing? Don't you just want male and female bullet connectors? Use the 3.5mm at the website says.

Also, using the proper crimp tool makes life much easier if you don't have it. Looks very professional too.

So I got a response from both who said that if I order the 3.9 kits and make note to them I would prefer the 3.5 they would do that.

I already have the crimp tool and the reason I want a kit is I have a 1981 DT175 I am converting to 12v and wiring for lights.
