starter fluid
« on: February 15, 2017, 07:56:11 PM »
needing starter fluid to get the bike running.  once i get it running it'll run pretty well.  it's just getting it started.  does needing starter fluid point to a larger issue i'm missing?  it's 30 degrees here. i've barely gotten the bike to start running since it sat for 2+ years.  on a warmer day it's easier to start.

Are you using the choke to start it? Operating the choke properly?

Carbs are probably clogged a bit as to not let a richer mixture through to help a cold start up. I would do the complete 3k mile service and clean the carbs off the bike being sure to remove the jets and emulsion tubes.

There is a cold start procedure in the owners manual that seems to help.

Definitely not recommended to use starter fluid.

I'm guilty of relying on it, learned my lesson, now I stay away from it unless it's 30 below or something.

When it's really cold and the battery is just not cranking - I use a remote starter kit (basically a portable car battery) so as to avoid draining the bike's battery.
