Can i run a heavy duty drive chain?
« on: February 19, 2017, 04:48:09 pm »
I think its time to replace the chain on my 72 CB500. My question is can I run a Heavy duty non o-ring like this?

I run this brand of HD chain on my 360 twin and i like it. I just want to make sure I wont have any clearance problems.

You can, but why? Your bike doesn't make nearly enough power to even remotely call for an HD chain.

I'm not sure if this is OP's case, but HD non-o-ring chains are much cheaper than standard o-ring chains around here. The only issue is that, indeed, on some bikes the heavy duty chains are a bit thick for clearance.

Can't remember off the top of my head and too lazy to check right now, but I believe the 500 has the same oil plug near the sprocket that a chain that's too thick will wear away, leading to a leak that requires splitting the cases to fix.

General consensus here is an O-ring 530 chain is a big no-no.

I got plenty of miles from an inexpensive standard 530 chain.

Well, the reason I wanted to use it was 1. Hopefully less stretch and I'm a big dude so I like things heavy duty. Also I like the way the gold chain looks on the bike...It adds a bit of bling and matches original gold paint.
So this chain is not O ring, just a regular HD 530 chain. Has anyone run HD chain on their 500 and were there any clearance issues? I had no issues running the 520 on my twin, it's nice and smooth and I like it a lot.

I'm 265# and have ridden two up a few times.
The chain is not the issue.

If what you're really after is the gold chain, do the 520 sprocket conversion.  The D.I.D gold x-ring chains are tough to beat.  I've seen hopped up banshee two stroke twins put some serious power to the sand paddles with those chains.

Don't do it. Standard chain is fine for thousands of miles.

Now you've all got me worried!  I installed an HD chain I bought from 4 into 1 last week.  What have I let myself in for exactly?

Can someone direct me to the specifics of HD? Is HD a protected standard? Really, I can't believe that advertisement bla is taken here so seriously.

A 520 o-ring chain is the same width as a 530 non o-ring chain at least it is with an RK chain.
