1000cc Virago Craigslist?

I don't know these bikes at all, but my buddy is looking for a cheap bike (previously a Harley guy with all the shirts and bandanas and such...) He offered the guy $350 and he didn't say no...but he also didn't say yes.

If this was a SOHC4 I'd grab it. I just don't know if these bikes are easy to work on, if parts are relatively cheap, etc.

The ad says that one cylinder probably needs a rebuild because it burns oil. To me that means that both cylinders need a re-ring, hone and overall top end rebuild. Not to mention carb rebuild, possibly tank cleaning, etc. I might go take a look with my buddy today, but wanted to get your quick thoughts first. Anyone here also a Virago guy?

I don't want to nitpick and I am actually not 100% sure, but I think Yamaha did not make a 1000cc Virago. They had a 920cc and later an 1100.

The entire Virago line from the 250 up to the 1100 was a pretty solid motorcycle. They did make a 1000 in 85 by the way. Like most bikes, they have a few common problems. The starter clutches were a weak point, but they can be repaired fairly easily. The carbs are standard Mikuni and are pretty simple to overhaul, although they are a pain in the ass to get off. There are a few tricks that will help and pay close attention to the hoses and lines that go to the carbs and air filter boxes. Most parts are still available from Yamaha and reasonably priced. There's a few forums covering all the Viragos, but they're no where near as good as this one. If the rest of the bike is in good condition, clean tank and not much rust, it's probably worth $500, not a whole lot more.

Cool, thanks guys. If my buddy can get it for $350 then it seems like a decent bike. Although I think he wants a bike he'll have to put minimal money and time into...I'm not so sure this fits the bill.
