« on: December 09, 2006, 10:02:27 AM »
well...if somebody had seen me do it, they would have said...."Here's your sign"....I am taking off the front fender of the parts bike on the table cause I had sold the fork brace under the fender.....took the 10mm bolt off the right side, and instead of walking around the table to take out the other side...I just leaned across the fender with the cordless impact and proceeded to take out the fender bolt...NOT.....I took out the 10mm bolt on the leg that seds fork oil shooting about 15 feet across the room.....onto my parts shelf....right into the little bins holding all my electrical connectors....AND...on top of that.....the cat gets in the line of fire...he's covered in fork oil....he's freaking out, I don't want him to lick it off figgering it might kill him...I wrap him in a towel and dunk him in the sink to get it off, the kids think I am trying to kill the cat.......#$%*.......

AAAAHHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA... that's hilarious!

If it makes you feel better, you're not the only dumb ass. I filled up my gas tank with vinegar last week to get the rust out of it. Rust was all the way up to the neck, so I filled it completely with vinegar. I left it in the garage, and of course being in MN, it got damn cold.

I went out to shake it, and thought, whoa, that vinegar is stronger smelling than it was before. The vinegar in the neck of the tank froze, expanding and leaking out the top, all over my workbench and garage floor. I opened the cap to relieve the pressure, and vinegar splattered all over me, including my feet. I went in the house, headed for the kitchen to wash my feet off. My wife comes in the kitchen, looking at me with my foot in the sink.

She just shook her head and walked away.

I watched a buddy pull the dome plug out of a hamilton standand hydromatic propeller under pressure.

At 600 psi it embedded the plug in the shop wall 15 ft away

The resultant oil stream looked like a rope. There was at least a gallon of oil that never touched the floor. Well at least till it hit the wall and ran down.

Sure Bob.

The Hamilton Standard Propeller uses engine oil boosted in pressure by the prop governor to control blade angle (pitch).

Does this using a piston and cam arrangement. Oil pressure ported to either side of the piston in the prop dome causes it to move.

The piston rides in a cam. To the cam is attatched a gear which meshes with gears on the prop. blade root.

As the piston moves the balde angle or pitch of the propeller changes

Nah dead nuts simple compared to aeroproduct prop's.

Seriously tho....

Its an example of engineering masterpiece. The principle and operation was used on everything.

Douglas DC-3 (three blade), Beech 18 (two blade) and every large piston and turboprop in between including the Lockheed C-130.

Here's my bosses dumbass move of the day:
Me and my collegue were send on a job to some hotel in a small town we had never heard off. My boss had loaded the satnav for us, as we were borrowing his car. We drove for 2.5 hours untill the satnav told us we had reached our destination.
We stood at a lakeside, there was no hotel to be seen anywhere.
We called back to the office to ask for the adress again. The boss said: "Why aren't you back yet? everything OK?".
-"We just got here, but we don't see the hotel. We do see a lake"
My boss curses heavily on the other end off the line and we find out that this is the spot he went fishing this weekend. He set the Satnav wrong, and it took us to the place he dailed in Saturday.
The Hotel was 20 minutes from the office, and it took us 5 hours to get there!   ;D

This Dumbass move happened a number of years ago but has to be one of strangest.
I had My 72 CL350 up on the center stand running in first gear while I lubed the chain. I set the can of spray lube down while I stood up and accidentally kicked it under the moving rear tire causing the bike to jump forward off the center stand. The bike rolled forward a few feet before it stalled and I could grab it and fell into an old folding table causing the legs on the other end of the table to colapse. This caused the open bag with my bowling ball to slide down the table emptying out the bowling ball that promptly rolled out the garage door and down the rather steep driveway into some fairly heavy traffic the bowling ball bounced off the tire of a fast moving pinto and ricocheted off the curb into the air and smashed into the windshield of a passing F250 pickup truck leaving a big star in the windshield before it continued to bounce off the sidewalk and disappeared into the small pond on the other side of the road.
I just kind of stood there in shock in the garage door watching. The Pinto and the pickup truck stopped. I went down and tried to explain what had happened. The only damage was the windshield which I offered to replace but the F250 driver said his glass was covered under his insurance with zero deductable. I don't think they believed me and decided it was a rock and eventually drove off.

A videotape would have been good. But it would have taken a film crew to catch it.
While it was happening it was anything but funny. Just happy no one was hurt.
I never did find the bowling ball. Even in the summer when the pond just about dried up.
We could start a new game traffic bowling.

I think the vinegar worked pretty well. I think I may need to do another pass with it, but there's way more clean metal in there than there was previously.
