The Starter Motor Safety Unit (SMSU) first appeared in the US on the K3 750's, and would only allow the starter to operate if either the clutch lever was pulled in, or the trans was in neutral. It was replaced on the K7 with the much simpler diode. Disco, if your clutch lever doesn't have the switch, which it shouldn't if it is a K2, and you use the SMSU (or a diode), the starter will only operate when the trans is in neutral.
