Physical location of the SSM unit?

Hi Guys,
I'm rebuilding a K2 & I'm using a repro wiring harness (I think it's K5?). I have a used Safety Starter Module, so its just easier to plug it in & be done with it if I can. So my questions are;
1. How do I test the used SSM to ensure it's works OK?
2 where does the SSM physically locate? And how is it held in place?

You mean the diode? -on my 550F it's just a little black rectangular component that has two male spade terminals and plugs in at the rear of the electrical panel under the sidecover. Mine was cactus as when I bypassed my missing clutch switch so I'd be able to use the starter even when not in neutral, the neutral light stayed permanently on. I removed the diode and that fixed it. Then I tested it by hooking a light bulb to a battery via the unit and then reversed the two spades. The cactus unit passed current through both ways and allowed the bulb to light - if it was working current would have passed through one way but not the other.

 Are we talking the clutch handle lock out safety starting device ? Don't think the USA model K2 ever came with it.

 Oh, thanks Cal, wasn't sure what that was for sure.  Sometimes I get my SSM and BDSM and other letters mixed up  :D

It's this little gadget. As said in earlier post, the repro wire harness is prob K5. It comes with the red multi-connector for the SSM. We didn't get any CB750's in Aus with the SSM. We went straight from K2 to K6 & missed everything in between. My K6 has the simplified diode setup, that works in conjunction with the clutch switch & prevents the starter motor operating if bike is in gear (unless clutch is pulled). I like it, so I want to keep that feature.

So, seeing as I happen to have one of these SSM gadgets (from old harness I picked up in US) & my new wiring harness suits it, I thought  I may as well put it in. I'm guessing there must have been more than this? How was it fixed originally? It didn't just hang in the breeze! Can I test it with a multimeter?

The Starter Motor Safety Unit (SMSU) first appeared in the US on the K3 750's, and would only allow the starter to operate if either the clutch lever was pulled in, or the trans was in neutral. It was replaced on the K7 with the much simpler diode. Disco, if your clutch lever doesn't have the switch, which it shouldn't if it is a K2, and you use the SMSU (or a diode), the starter will only operate when the trans is in neutral.

Thanks for the replies. Firstly (like Ekpent) I wasn't sure on the terminology for this gizmo as we didn't see it Downunder. Thanks Scottly for straightening that out (SMSU not SSM, or BDSM Ekpent  ;).

So, let me get this straight. I will be adding the clutch switch. With the SMSU fitted I can be in gear & pull the clutch and still operate the electric starter?

Correct. Or, you can be in neutral, or both in neutral and with the clutch lever pulled.

The SSM is the electric starter lockout once the motor is running.
This is totally bull#$%*; there is no lockout for when the motor is running!?? What orifice did you pull this misinformation from?
