Brand new engine cases!
« on: February 27, 2017, 06:51:36 PM »
Heh, He...at least, that's what they look like after Restocycle is done with them! I've been working on 2 engines, one is a 750, the other a 550, and I have this eerie sensation that I am working on Honda's engine production line, circa 1972...everything looks brand new!

All I can say about Nil's work is: is you have your engine apart, STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING and send him your cases (or cylinders, or head) for his treatment. You'll never regret it! He took less time to do mine and return them than it did me to get them packed and sent to him.

:) :) :)

Agreed.  I just got my left crank case cover, speedo gear box, rear brake cover, tach gear mount, rear hub flange, and alternator cover back.  It's painfully obvious where damage was obscured by oxidation, so make sure you're sending good stuff to be cleaned up.  My 550 is going to be looking really good when it's done.

OK, I got some of the 550: the crankcases alone look like something virgin, while I've never seen an oil pan (among the other parts!) that looked this new!

So are the outside of the cases just bare metal now ? If so how does that hold up against corrosion in the future ? They do look very purdy---

Vapour blasting, yeah? I'm incredibly lucky to have a vapour blaster local to me, one of only 2 that I know of in the province.

I will say, I've never had a piece turn out as nice as I see in these threads, but other than the crankcase, cylinders, and head, it all gets polished up a bit first anyway.

Province? Are you in Canada? If so, where? I'd let be a vapour blast connection

Ontario, near Oshawa. There's one that I know of in Hamilton, and one in south Whitby (Rocket Performance I think it was)

Brian, the owner, used to go to the bike shows in Toronto, don't know if he still does.

They are vapor-blasted.
I don't know about their future, but can offer this much from experience: once the original lacquer wears off, they usually corrode a layer that was treated (etched) to hold that lacquer coating. Once that gets removed, they tend to stay in the new condition unmolested for a LONG time. Even some light polishing then, like with rouge or metal polish, makes them look perfect for a long, long time.

I have had a few engines done now with vaporblasting or hydrablasting which is the same process.
One of the engines had been done about 5 years ago and still looks great today.
Are you going to paint the engine took look like the original Honda silver or leave them as they are?

Vapor Blasting is as much an Art as it is a process. Just popping parts into a cabinet that wet blasts, hydro blasts, vapor blasts, etc will not guarantee the same results that Nils (and a few others with extensive experience in VB produce). There's a specific "recipe" of media, pressure, and skill that yield the results you see here.

The parts return incredibly clean, even below the surface layer. So, if you chose to have them coated afterwards, pre-cleaning would not be required (except for a degreasing to paint/prime as general good habit). VB produces a "peened" finish that retards dirt and grime from attacking the surface. It will still oxidize as aluminum does, but will remain good looking longer than raw aluminum. And some occasional cleaning and buffing will restore their lustre.
