wixom fairing experience?
« on: March 01, 2017, 07:59:17 PM »
I have a Wixom fairing that came on a bike I bought, I've considered making a short tinted windshield like the Harley guys use  and trying it on a 750  for use on a long trip this summer.
Back in the day I was never a Wixom guy so I have no experience except the one on my brothers 450 before I was riding. Any Wixom fairing users out there?

I have one that came on the bike.  I used it thru the winter and on a 1800 mile trip to the Dragon and on the BRP.  I had replaced the cracked screen with a new full size one.  It gives a comfortable, warmer ride.  Recently I've been going without and getting used to it.  On a trip, it's handy for five hours of rain.

I had the same thought with a low windshield as is the style now... If I keep my knockoff wixom.
Have to really consider if I want the windshield..never ran one..
Ran a R100RT with the fairing, but winshield off... Was a bit better on the hands in cooler weather.

Don,
The look may not be as appealing with it on, but in my opinion you won't regret it especially on the long haul. There is a world of difference at highway speeds all to do with buffeting and fatigue from just simply holding on to the bars. Back in 1975 I had a Wixom on my CB750 but didn't appreciate it as a kid. I'd put one on in a heartbeat if I could get my hands on one for decent money.

I am not fond of the bulk of the Vetter, and after seeing 6, 789 of them,  maybe more ..they got less exciting.
I see a lot of batwing style still on baggers and the design does not look as outdated as a Vetter..
Vetter is probably better... but a like a lot of things that are better, I still want to ride vintage Honda..not the new stuff..

I bought an Electra Glide full touring bagger and that's what changed my mind, and that was 2005.  Modern touring bikes are VERY good at what there designed to do...Eat miles at high speed in a lazy boy recliner.  Every bike after that one was a bagger with at least a large windscreen (Road King).  For me, I'm just tired of the wind blast anymore, maybe when we move to Oregon I'll strip her back down.  Wear I'm at now I'm almost always at 70+ mph on pretty straight roads, where were going in Oregon most of the roads mirror the rivers so high speeds are only for short bursts and you stay mostly around 45ish laid over... ;D

I actually own a 78 full Vetter Goldwing I'm waking it from a 20 year nap. Two years ago I rode a 79 GL with a windjammer to Sturgis so I'm sold on a fairing for touring. Back in the day I was told the handlebar mount fairings affected handling, that was possibly Vetter advertising.
I'm considering going to the SOHC reunion this year, and thinking what I would ride if I went.  That's what prompted the Wixom question, I have one hanging in the shop and I must admit, the similar shapes I see on Harleys don't annoy me in the least. I've been undressing cb750's for so long it's odd to me to be putting one back into 70's form.

In 1971, my dad bought a K1 750 with a dealer installed Wixom fairing and I believe Bates brand saddle bags.  He also bought me a naked Honda 350 twin.  We did many long trips on those bikes though I was somewhat miserable on the 350 when the weather got cool.  He later traded my 350 on a new, Vetter equipped K4 for himself and gave me his K1.  I loved that old K1!  That Wixom equipped bike made my commutes to college nice.  I do think that the Vetter made a nicer touring bike.  I picked up my  F1 back in 20009 and rode it a while with no fairing.  I quickly wanted a fairing and bought a cheap handle bar mounted one and it worked ok for a few years.  I then found a Vetter with lowers and put that on.  What a difference!  As I recall, the Wixom went on and off relatively easy compared to a Vetter, so if you don't intend to leave the fairing on, go with the Wixom.
