1969 CB750K - 11,999 miles - The Patina Bike - SHE RUNS!!!
« on: March 02, 2017, 09:13:18 am »
Yes, the HONDA gods have smiled on me again. A good friend of mine that I had not seen in 4 years called me the other day and said he had a 1969 CB750 to sell me. Told me to bring lots of money as it was a sandcast. He had to text me a pic in order for me to believe him. I asked him the engine number and he said there is no number on the case. Found out the original owner (his father) broke a chain and changed out the cases. Now comes the strange part. In the owners manual for this bike is the HONDA warranty card with his fathers name and case number of 1005987, but the build date is 11/69. This has me confused as I thought the sandcast cases were no longer used after September 1969. Maybe someone can fill me in on this issue. The frame number is 1012665 if that helps ID it. The original owner passed away and his son said his father never threw any parts out and he is sure he has the cases, title and airbox in the barn which he is going to get for me. I see the diecast cases have the chain protector near the front sprocket. This blue/green bike has 11,999 miles on the clock and the speedo and tach work smooth. In fact, the speedo and tach faces and cases look so good I am going to keep them on the bike. Engine turns over good. Brought the bike home last week and can tell it was in a barn with all the dust on it. The bike is a very nice survivor. Tank is rusty inside and will clean up. Side covers have all tabs, but one tab was broke and still on the bike. Double cut front fender in nice shape. Duckbill seat foam is flat, but the cover is in very good condition with no tears. Recessed ignition and key in place. The license plate says 1979. All chrome is really decent, but I will have that redone anyway. OEM chain guard and acorn mirrors in place. PO put on cushy white hand grips, finned engine covers and crash bars which I removed. 4 cable carbs with pods rejetted to 130 mains. 3 of the 4 slides are stuck, but happy the son did not force the throttle cables. Glad to see float bowls are drained and clean. Appears he cut the headers off the at the muffler and ran straight pipes. The son is going to see if the OEM mufflers are still in the barn. Nice to find the OEM side stand and center stand still in place. Fork ears are not bent, but PO drilled a hole in front right ear. Rear fender has small hole from antenna. My friend gave me a nice deal on the bike and I am not going to list it here. If you have to know send me a PM. He has restored a number of other bikes and said he knows how the cost mounts up fast so kept the price manageable for me. He is a true friend to do that and to locate the other parts still in the barn. My plans...to clean the bike up and get it running in the condition it is in. Might have to toss on some 341's just to drive it as my local law would not like the straight pipes...or maybe pick up some 300's. Maybe drive it around a bit this summer and then do the rest of the work next winter. Forgot to mention it has the wrinkle tank too.

Sweet, but i think those are not stock head pipes, the radius is too tight on the bends.
Try meguiars 17 on the guages..it cleaned mine right up.
Flits will get frame back to original sheen..
Why rechrome..its more more as an original bike...

Nice find. I don't think you should touch that chrome. It really looks nice after cleaning. Keep it unrest ores as much as possible.

Nice find indeed. That is a huge span between the frame and engine numbers. I have not seen such a span before. Possibly an engine that did not originally meet specs and was pulled off the line, reworked, and put back in the assembly line. Honda did everything they could to keep new bikes rolling off the line as the demand was overwhelming. Just guessing.

Great find.  I bet there's some decent paint underneath that top layer of dust.

Here is a pic of the exhaust. 754 is correct these are not stock head pipes. Check out the tails with adjustable baffles. Used heat to get the carb slides free. Carbs are now off for cleaning. Put in a battery to find all electrics work. Engine turns over nice with the starter. Did not see spark on the old plugs, but getting a bit ahead of myself. Couldn't help it.

Snuff-or-Not baffles...never heard of them. Are those baffles supposed to be adjustable or are they supposed to work off that spring with adjuster? I wonder if I could get away with running them?

Like your ideas about keeping it OEM with the patina in place. Don't have any 750's with original patina. I may just give that some thought. Would be cool to have one like this all OEM. If I should put my extra set of 341's on there and get the OEM airbox should take these 130's out and rejet back to the original 120's or go with the 110's?

Turn the knob for straight thru, or other way for quieter.. Pretty neat..lol..
Old school.
They sold 100,000 of them in one year.. Very popular on Honda scramblers.

I'd second (or third ?) the idea to keep it as original as possible.   Do the regular maintenance items, air box, tires, etc, get it running good, and just clean the rest.
Maybe even go so far as not polishing the patina off the engine cases?    Some bikes have been sitting out behind the barn, and you have no choice but to re chrome and repaint, but this one looks to be in great shape, just dirty.

I normally like everything shiny and perfect too, but I gotta admit, when at a bike or car show, the  originals always seem more interesting...

How did the original owner stop at 11,999?   I'd have to drive around the block a few times before parking it just to watch the speedometer flip over to 12,000 ;D

Agreed Jerry...good advise about keeping the patina all over the bike. Never did one like that and it does sound cool. Forgot to mention it is a wrinkle tank too.

Get it cleaned up , better pipes... I dont care if it has the airbox.. , iI think it should be nominated bike of the month..
If you dont run stock pipes I think a Hooker 4-2 or 4-1 or a Jardine would look awesome..

My 5511 has it's original motor, it's E5930 so there were differing spreads. Bikes that didn't survive the QC tests were sent back for repair, so depending on what needed work an engine could be earlier or later than the frame. I'm also a fan of original, anyone can restore one, but documented mostly original bikes are harder to find.
Enjoy it and document all the history you can get on it too. I found the guy that assembled mine. He still has the next one he assembled, I'm going to try to buy it tomorrow. It's an early diecast with a later engine.

No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
If you love it, set it free, if it stays it's probably one of my 750's.
