CB550 and Cb400 F Models
« on: March 02, 2017, 05:54:27 AM »
I have an opportunity to purchase a front hub of a 1977 Cb550 and I was wondering if it would fit my 1977 Cb400F.  I plan on lacing the hub to a new 18 inch rim.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the 550 hub is 40 spoke and 400 is 36. So just need the correct hoop for it

Are the front axles the same?  Then ll I need to do is lace the cb550 hub to a 50 spoke rim and I will be 'good to go'!

'Thanks'

Well, lacing a 50 spoke rim to a 40 spoke hub will be a trick. But I doubt that it will be "good to go" assuming that was a typo. I'm pretty sure you can make it work but there could be many issues. The axle diameter might be the same (check the bearing part numbers and see if those bearings are identical or have the same ID).
Fork leg spacing is unlikely to match so it's probable that special spacers will be needed.
I think the rotor mounting bolt pattern is different. The 350/400 brakes are not the same as the 500/550 so you have to figure a way for some combination of parts to work together.
Speedo drive is another interesting issue. I think Honda used different speedo ratios for large vs small displacement bikes, and I think they changed at 500cc but it may have been at 750?.

I think you misunderstood the comment from innovativems.

He is not suggesting that I lace a 40 spoke hub to a 50 spoke rim... he meant that if I get a 50 spoke hub just make sure that I get a 50 spoke rim.
