Gauge lowering options?
« on: February 24, 2017, 06:30:40 AM »
Hello,

I would like to lower my gauges a bit, but I have this so called "unicorn" upper triple. I`ve searched the forum and found out that lowering is easy task if you have newer upper triple where the gauges mount differently ( http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=63166.0 ). I would like to use my old gauges if possible.

Is it possible to bend this unicorn part? I think it`s cast aluminum so my first toughts were it will crack. Secondly it`s quite expensive part so destroying it is not an option.

I also read that newer model triples won`t work because there is a different offset. Secondly newer gauges mount from beneath with bolts on a bracket. Mine just squeeze on a holder that is connected to the unicorn tip. So the easiest way would be to bend the part (risky). Second is to cut the part and weld it on a different angle. Third would be fabricating some kind of bracket.

Any other methods/ideas? Anyone done this?

Get an aftermarket triple from Cognito  Moto, and drill/tap 2 holes on the bottom for a gauge bracket.
Sell your old triple to an old asian dude. They believe unicorn horns have medicinal properties.

Definitely don't cut it or modify it. With the gauge rings it will probably pay for most of a new tree.

I make top trees as well and have a number of designs available. Any of which would work with your gauges. The link is in my signature if you are interested. Feel free to shoot me a PM as well.

Swap the top and bottom triple trees to a newer model, I'm sure someone will trade you for a later set and toss in a steel gauge bracket too.

I believe the 73-78 cb750K trees are 60mm offset just like the early unicorn trees.  The 76-78 F model trees are 50mm offset.

Yeah, like you all said better to leave it be and get a new triple or something. I would like to keep it looking vintage so I'm would prefer an old/oem triple. Also I would like to preserve that light unit on top of the triple. I think it's possible to mount it on any triple, but an oem would be the number 1 choise.

Can anyone confirm this? I need to be sure so I don`t order a wrong part.

If somebody has a spare 73-78 cb750k upper triple please feel free to contact me.
