When I rebuilt my '78 750K's carbs, I did what most people do -- buy a kit on ebay (K&L or whatever) and git'r done.
One thing I've noticed though, and I've seen it in every kit for every set of carbs I've done, it comes with usually a new main jet, a new pilot screw, new needle, new needle passage, new float needle (and seat if applicable)...
Usually, I'll just put em all in because...y'know, new must be better? Well, I've had some problems with carbs (in the past on other bikes and now), in that I'm starting to think maybe the pilot screws, needles, and needle passages in these kits maybe aren't exactly to ma Honda/Kawi/Suzuki/Yami specs. If it's 1.5 turns out for OEM, maybe it's not for god knows what measurements are used for the new screws -- they look similar, but being precision devices, it could be very different.
In all the carbs I've ever done, and I've done some nasty lookin' carbs, the mains, pilot screws, and needles, all come out looking perfectly fine. I get that, especially on a CV carb, the needle and passage can wear oval, and I wouldn't really see it, but I'm honestly starting to think that maybe slightly worn OEM is better than a pilot screw and needle I know nothing about. I've pulled my carbs again, and I'm just swapping all the metal bits back to the original, probably 40 year old components (EXCEPT the float needle, that's just an open/close deal, and they've been working fine).
Shoulda just bought OEM Honda rubber-only rebuilt kits.
