650 or 550 cam
« on: July 04, 2017, 09:02:40 PM »
First question because typically I find what I need by searching.

Tearing into a 78 550 and need help identifying the cam. I found a 650 cam gear in a parts bucket. I don't know if it was swapped at some point in the past. I do not have another 550 or 650 camshaft not in an assembled engine to compare to. Anyway to ID from the pics or is there a measurement I can compare?

Once again the forum comes through for me. I'm almost certain it's a 650 after reviewing this photo. I've looked at several topics and other pics and this is the best reference so far.

Did your bike have a working 550 tach on it?   I do not believe the 650 cam is compatible with the 550 tach.

They aren't. It didn't. Bike is a basket case. It has 3 tach cables in various piles.

Do you have measurements?  Can you post them?  I searched and didn't find anything 100% other than 650 cams have 5 spirals. No idea if 550 have the same. I don't have reliable measurements to compare against unless I pop the head cover off my 650.

I didn't look hard enough for service limits in the manual - a quick glance didn't jump out at me.  Thanks for the info.

Also found the 550 at intake:35.85 and exhaust:34.45 but I think there's a typo in there.  Right next to it is listed standard value of the intake at 34.93-34.97.  I guess Honda had a cam that grew as it wore down.  I'll go with over and under 35mm for ID purposes.

So verified 650 cam.  Intake was upper end of 35mm and exhaust was near 35.5mm.
