Engine surgery
« on: March 05, 2017, 11:05:26 PM »
Hi All,

Since I'm a Dutchman sometimes browsing fora for very particular pieces of info can be a hassle so here I go:

Are there any in depth topics on CB650Z engine overhaul?
I'm asking since the piece of misery I bought is leaking her wet guts out on practically every seal.
She ran only about 40K but she leaks big time, and I mean she could be cousins with a strainer!
And I figured once I'm at it I might aswel go more in depth and be thorough and do full surgery.

Any pointers to in depth, illustrated topics on the matter, suggestions for forum members to ask for their do's and !DONT'S!.. anything is highly appreciated.

Ha ha, I can't help mate, I'm only interested in CB750's, but I love your post, and I sympathise with your misery. Sell that pile of sh1t and buy a CB750 mate, and I'll give you all the help you need! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

A few members here are doing/just finished doing complete 650 teardown upgrade and rebuilds, me included, so looking through our build threads might help.

My thread link is in my signature. Others are CB750 Cafe Racer Fan's "Hot mess" and GV1390's build thread. And with a forum name like "CB650" he's has a lot of info on these bikes.

I would start a thread in the projects section and we among others will chime in with help. If you do, throw a link to it in this thread so people can follow the bread crumbs :)

Edit: Or you could get a 750 and move in with Terry. You'll have a nice running bike with his help but I hear your diet will consist of funnel webs and vegemite. One of those is more dangerous than the other, but I'm not sure which.

Depending on how long the bike sat there is a chance that running it with good oil (oil with adequate zinc) could rejuvenate the seals and help seal the seams.

Fwiw - my bike leaked from a trouble shifter and case seals while I was running castrol.  A couple changes with hondalube and it seems to have stopped.

Hi

I didn't use the word strainer in a joking manner.. I mean she leaks on all sides, everywhere. i'd hate to clean her all up, do the Paul Smart build and find out I wont have need for a nav getting home but instead follow the oil trail :P I'l put up some pics of the engine tomorrow so you can see. Anyways, I'd feel generally better about this build knowing the engine is good for at least another 50K miles.

No worries mate, last time I was in Amsterdam all I saw was bicycles, mopeds and American draft dodgers smoking weed and eating hamburgers, but I loved the place, and would go back there in a flash for some of those delightful pickled crankshafts, as long as there was plenty of Heineken to wash them down! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Dave,

Thanx for the pointers to the treads! I will go ever them.

@ anyone Dutch here: anyone (located near Helmond) that can be my hotline during engine disassembly? I got the guts to do it but lack the expertise. I worked smaller Hondas (MT5) engines, lawnmower engines etc, but they are way less complex
