I kind of miss that unique sound of the gear-driven cams, but what I really miss is the torque.

Sport Rider published the following rendering of a Honda VFR800 naked bike, using the motor from the sixth generation 2002-2013 RC46 VFR800 sport-touring bike. 

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

At the time of the rendering, Honda had stopped selling the VFR800 in the States, and was only selling the VFR1200 behemoth. 

Honda has since re-introduced the VFR800 to the States in its current eighth generation (fugly) form.

I wouldn't own a VFR800 men, any engine capable of revving way past 10,000 RPM should have a gear driven valve train, chains are fine, but Honda still can't build a decent chain tensioner, just ask any VTR1000F owner...... (I've got APE tensioners in my 2006 VTR1000, after seeing the damage a failed tensioner did to my 1999 VTR1000) I still wonder if I could install a VFR750 engine into a CB750 frame.....

I think the redline of the seventh and eighth generations is 12K.  Not a huge spin past 10K, but I get what you mean Terry.  The modern VFR motors are pretty reliable and mile eaters, but they are sport tourers and not super sports or superbikes. 

I would think that the bike should be fine for street use.

I would love to mate, but I'm a huge fat man and would probably be laughed off the track. I have had it up to 250 KPH on the road though, and it had plenty more left over........

Well I learned something today, I didn't know that the first gen VFR800's had gear driven cams? The next gen were back to cam chains (I presume to work with the VTEC system) and they have the majority of cam chain tensioner failures.

Regardless, the last of the VFR750's were the best (in my humble opinion............) and certainly the prettiest. My little VFR is a sexy beast........

Ha ha, not much comes close to a Rocket III when it comes to torque, I don't reckon my VFR's got very much torque to be honest, (it's high revving engine and that V4 howl is what grabs me by the goolies) but then again, I'm used to having my arms torn completely out of their sockets whenever I ride my Rocket Simon, so I'm probably biased.............

I owned a 1986' 1st gen. VFR750F1 w/ gear driven cams,loved the sound of them.The bike was comfortable for a Sport Bike,drove it from Cape Cod to Denver,CO. and back and it was great.

That Rocket III is something else (witness the Triumph Streamliner with twin Rocket IIIs and turbos).  I still love the sound of a V4 though.

The 5th Gen 1998-2001 had gear driven cams, similar to the RC51, so it has that characteristic whirl/whine.  Super reliable bike.

I had a 92 VFR and I could idle down to 15 MPH in top gear and I could wind it up to its top speed.  A friends Kawi 9R and my  VFR would hold roll on tests and I would not be passed til the 9R's top speed would pass me.(note" we both started at 15 MPH in top gear.  That is likely the only way a VFR  could be faster.  The 9R was killer bike.)

So I saw an RC51 this morning, and really I have not stopped thinking about that one I test drove...and now that the CB is near completion, I texted the RC51 owner a pic of my bike and asked him if he sold his bike...he told me; "No and if I want it in the future, it is mine......" Quite a dilemma
