CB650 Seat opinions needed.
« on: March 08, 2017, 03:14:41 PM »
My 1981 CB650 has a couple of oil leaks, but runs good and I have a look in my head of a CB750 want to be bike. I know, but it was only $500 a while back. So, I now have made a deal on a CB750F seat. I will have to fab a bracket for it but do not plan to change the frame dip. I am thinking I can hide it with the right side cover.
Any ideas for that would be great.
Also, I will loose the rear chrome fender and looking for advice about how to finish that off.
I love to make my bikes worthless due to high mileage!

I agree. It looks pretty good, assuming you can get it to mount that close to the frame rails.  You'll have Honda guys scratching their heads as to what you're riding.

Take a look at this, some of the overseas 650 models actually had a seat similar to the 750ss seat

http://www.netbikes.com.au/projects/cb650/cb650.htm

If you had a 79 cb650 frame you'd have the same straight frame rather than the dip, so if you can craft something to compensate then you'd be golden.

Pshh, I don't even mind seeing the frame tube poking out like that. I agree, looks good.

I think it looks pretty good too.  I have the tool box that goes under that seat fairing if you want it for postage.

Thats kink of what I have been thinking.  Trim and slide up the rear fender and then use the mount holes for a smaller LED taillight into the square housing.

I guess I dont have too much of a problem doing this because I do have two CB750 projects. This one runs and just using what I have. It will be my girls bike. I have another tank I am working on. It is a 1975 tank and will be bare metal with a brushed look and the quote "I will not flirt with the Darkness that I am here to Fight" , pinstriped on the top rear of the tank. I also have to move the petcock a little rearward so the tank will move up a few more inches, then I can mount the seat.

What I have seen on a bike before and liked was a Stainless Steel mesh, like woven. Formed into a side cover. I can order the mesh from McMasters but may be above my skill level to do it right with a bulge in it.

I have a 1980 CB650 Custom, and have redone the seat. By redone, I mean have removed the old seat cover, shaved down the foam, contoured/rounded the back, took about an inch off the lowest points on the sides (to make the dip less pronounced), and recovered it.

I also have the same Lucas style tail light you have pictured. I trimmed the rear fender by about 6 inches, then installed the tail light.

Here are a few pics...
