My three basic rules for any motorcycle:

1:  Tires and Tubes are cheaper than my health insurance deductible.
2:  Fresh Oil and Filter are cheaper than an engine rebuild.
3:  Spark plugs are cheaper than pistons.  (Usually 2 stroke specific/jetting related)

My Tacoma has gone over 100,000 miles on its plugs. 

My Monterey boat's plugs were changed last year for the first time, 10 years old!

I change the plugs on every bike I buy just as a matter of course, but I have never put enough miles on any of my bikes do need more that oil changes and valve adjustments. I do check plug condition and gaps annually, but I don't think 20k is a magic number for replacement.

I did note the spark plug comment was more 2 stroke/Jetting related, especially singles.  If you jet them on the fat side, you may foul a spark plug on a hot day.  If you jet them on the lean side, you could hole a piston on a cold day.  My old 250R was pretty sensitive to temperature changes.
