Flaaaaat!
« on: March 28, 2017, 04:58:47 PM »
Dang construction.

Ran over an 8d finishing nail this morning - back tire of my R1200 GS.

Was able to repair the hole with some of that sticky rope, 4 small canisters of CO2, and an extra 10 psi from a fellow biker on a Honda Africa Twin.

Plug held for 35 miles of freeway, likely will hold until I can get the tire replaced - but the bike is out of service until then.

Those sticky rope kits are rubbish mate, I had 3 punctures on my FJR1300, I replaced both tyres after the first two, but then copped another nail on my brand new Pirelli rear tyre, so I did a lot of googling and the best kit out there is the Stop & Go Pocket Tyre Tire Plugger kit, it's easy to use, and I've done several thousand miles on that tyre with no loss of air pressure, so I'm confident that it'll last the life of the tyre. The big Yam ran out of rego last year, so I'm carrying the kit on my R1100GS now, and I might put my little compressor in the top box too. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I've had great success with the sticky ropes on a few tire punctures in my lifetime, and that's all I use.  I say if the tire is holding air, ride it.  I've also heard lots of complaints about the stop-and-go system, but no personal experience with it.
the last time I had a puncture was on the Goldwing rear tire.  I sticky roped it and never had to replace a tire yet until it was worn out.  Prep of the puncture before inserting the rope is paramount, and use of the adhesive goo is a plus.

Where have you heard lots of complaints about the Stop & Go kit Steve? A rubber plug will always be better than that sticky rope crap, that's why tyre shops use rubber plugs! ;D

It's only flat on the bottom.

Go metric, every inch of the way!

Tire shops around here pull the tire off the rim, plug the hole with the sticky rope stuff, trim off the excess rope stuff on the inside of the tire, smooth it out with a die grinder then put a patch on it. The first time I saw them do it I thought it was a bit overkill but none of them ever leaked again. Someone told me that they had to do it that way because of the law but I can't verify that.

I wouldn't trust that sticky rope sh1t on my worst enemy's bike! It might be alright for cars, where if a tyre goes down at speed it won't kill you, but on a bike? madness.

Over here bike shops use rubber plugs because tyres are made of rubber, not sticky string, so they've discovered that rubber works best to seal holes in rubber tyres.

I'll have to check those Goldwing forums and see who's complaining about the stop & go kit to see what their beef is, I found it to be the best kit ever and easy to use, so I'd like to know what their problems are, but I'm guessing that user incompetence will be playing a big part........ ;D

"User incompetence" can play on a lot of things....sticky rope included, I guess.

Frankly I don't trust any of them - which is why I'm replacing the tire.  Not a huge loss for me - since that bike does 12 to 15 thousand a year I have to replace them every year anyway.

That said.  Terry, based on the experts on The Internet, seems like the going opinion is that the sticky rope is the best option for plugs.  Something about the steel belts in the tires cutting the head off mushroom plugs but having no effect on the ropes.

I reserve my judgement about that - I have both types of kits on the bike.

I will say this - as for ease of installation...  I HATE the rear fender on that BMW.  It has a plastic mud deflector that gets in the way so that there are hardly any angles you can get at punctures with.

Ha ha, well the "Internet Experts" are full of sh1t then mate, I did a google search just now, and all I could find was the Stop & Go kit being voted best motorcycle tyre repair kit on numerous sites. Regardless, I know what I'd use, and it doesn't involve sticky string.

That stupid hugger thing does nothing but get in the way Rob, do what the PO of my R1100GS did, and take it off. Cheers, Terry. ;D
